Job Description

Core Responsibilities

  • This is a senior leadership position in the Law Department and General Litigation that requires a high degree of proactive leadership and problem solving. The attorney is expected to assist and be jointly responsible for the running of the General Litigation group.

  • You will lead and manage a team of attorneys that works together to achieve superior results by: (a) setting high standards for performance; (b) encouraging behaviors that are aligned with the Department as a whole and creatively embracing new ways of doing things; (c) maintaining a culture of accountability by providing honest, constructive, and timely feedback consistent with our commitment to performance management.

  • You will ensure quality assurance of attorney case preparation by measuring overall productivity and quality of performance through quarterly case reviews, the use of reports in Law Manager and overall compliance with the Litigation Guide.

  • You will handle an appropriately sized caseload of complex or high-exposure matters.

  • You will work with the insurance team to ensure insurance company is timely notified of all matters which require.

  • You will assist the Associate General Counsel in executing the Strategic Plan.

  • You will conduct monthly (or more frequent if needed) Note of Issue reviews with team to determine whether motions for summary judgment should be made, review of liability posture, whether reserves are needed, whether expert reports have been served and whether there remains any discovery which should be pursued or provided prior to moving forward with litigation.

  • You will ensure motions are filed timely in cases pending with team.

  • You will review requests for authority and makes recommendations to the Associate General Counsel.

  • You will ensure awareness of teams ''top 10'' cases and can apprise Associate General Counsel of status of same. Assist in keeping running top 10 list updated as well as quarterly reports on high exposure cases.

  • You will help to ensure the correct expert and witnesses are identified for use in a case.

  • You will assist team attorneys with trial preparation, serving as second seat attorney if needed.

  • You will supervise and assist in the development of less experienced attorneys to maximize performance.

  • You will understand case load of team and help in maintaining ''right work, right person'' with case distribution (case count, type of case, difficulty level, etc).

  • You will help to identify leadership roles, opportunities and/or training needs for team members and make recommendations to the Associate General Counsel re: same

  • You will present/lead topic discussions at Monthly team meetings and/or at Legal Services quarterly meetings.

  • You will take at least one annual leadership training course/attend leadership session designed to improve management skills, innovating thinking, accountability or drive for results.

  • You will organize one presentation/CLE to the General Litigation team.

  • You will identify opportunities and implement process improvements that contribute to efficient and cost-effective workflow throughout General Litigation.

  • You will serve as back up for the daily litigation calendar.

  • You will serve as a trusted and reliable member of the leadership team in General Litigation and the overall Law Department and upholding the highest standards of business ethics and integrity.

  • You will work on various projects, in conjunction with the Associate General Counsel, as needed.

Required Education/Experience

  • Juris Doctorate from accredited Law School and minimum of 8 years experience as a practicing trial attorney, with New York tort litigation experience.

Relevant Work Experience

  • Minimum of 8 years experience as a practicing trial attorney, with New York tort litigation experience. Required and

  • Experience managing team of attorneys, including providing routine feedback, change management, holding team members accountable and identifying areas for improvement. Required

  • Highly organized and attentive to detail Required

  • Demonstrated experience improving processes related to litigation. Required

  • Must excel at written and oral communication skills, negotiation skills, presentation skills, interpersonal skills, and must maintain a focus on customer service. Required

  • Must have excellent case analysis and strategy abilities. Required

  • Self-starter who takes initiative and thinks creatively and flexibly. Required

  • Comfortable with setting reserves on litigation and assessing case valuation. Preferred

  • Experience with metrics and litigation related statistics/reporting. Preferred

  • Leadership or participation in local tort bar activities a plus. Preferred

  • Highly skilled in the use of Law Manager, and the ability and willingness to champion other technology platforms to enhance efficiency. Preferred

  • Experience leading cross-functional teams desired. Preferred

  • Other: License to practice law in New York Required

Other Physical Demands

  • Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.

  • Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory and beyond, as needed.
