Eversource Energy Meter Specialist-Electric Meter Lab in New Britain, Connecticut

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

An associate degree in electrical or electronic engineering/technology or equivalent formal training and eight years of related experience, including at least two years’ experience in the Meter Specialist position is required. Additional formal education preferred. Individual must have a valid motor vehicle license.

To be considered candidate must pass the Eversource Tech Test.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Individual plans, performs, and monitors complex tasks associated with the maintenance, testing, design, and installation coordination of new and existing metering systems and projects. May work individually or as a member of a team or may direct and/or coordinate others on projects of a limited scope.

PRIMARY DUTIES

1. Performs meter testing for complex metering systems, including but not limited to substation tie-line; generation; and co-generation metering that interface with the Eversource system. Validates test results with representatives of other companies; collaborates on testing inter-company meter ties owned by other companies.

2. Monitors, tests, and maintains all EML test equipment including, but not limited to, accuracy test boards, time-run boards, cooker boards, watthour standards, and battery charging equipment. Monitors, tests, and maintains field load test equipment; coordinates with division Meter Service departments all efforts to identify and correct reported malfunctions of load test metering equipment used in the field and performs annual tests.

3. Collaborates with field personnel and customers on the design, program, installation, and verification of complex metering systems and projects to meet the needs of the company and customers.

4. Develops standards and procedures, and trains Meter & Service and EML personnel in the operation of new metering, plus the recognition and identification of malfunctions in meters and associated equipment.

5. Troubleshoots electronic meters and metering systems, including printed circuit boards and/or associated electronic components.

6. Analyzes and tracks failures of electronic metering equipment, develops trends, and recommends equipment upgrades.

7. Reviews metering one-line, three-line, and wiring diagrams for accuracy and identifies discrepancies to Meter Engineering.

8. Prepares metering diagrams of standard and special metering installations.

9. Provides technical expertise to other members of the department, operating company personnel, service companies, customers, and others as required.

10. Collaborates with the EML and engineering staff in the test and evaluation of new meters and metering devices, including the development of Eversource standard metering software programs. Directs field forces on installation, collection, and compilation of performance data. Evaluates data and makes recommendations accordingly on its use.

11. Trains employees of a lower classification or within lower steps of the same classification.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Ensures the safe performance of all assigned work and compliance with all applicable rules and procedures as set forth by existing Company policies.
  • Assures that defective equipment is repaired and returned to service in minimum time for assigned jobs.
  • Assures that newly acquired equipment is in acceptable operating condition and correctly connected to the system for assigned jobs.
  • Ensures as-built drawings are accurate for assigned completed jobs.
  • Ensures accurate documentation of test results.
  • Assures coordination of testing and maintenance schedules for assigned jobs. Compliance with all laws, regulations, and legal requirements pertaining to Electric Meter Laboratory functions.
  • Proper representation of Eversource to external customers, suppliers, and agencies.

AUTHORITY

  • Authorize removal of metering systems and/or electronic metering equipment for test and/or repair.
  • Recommend procedures relative to the repair or replacement of defective meters and electronic subcomponents.
  • Recommend maintenance programs, schedules, and upgrades for solid-state metering equipment and devices.
  • Recommend installation procedures for metering systems and electronic devices.
  • Recommend in-service test procedures for metering systems and electronic equipment.
  • Makes independent decisions under frequently changing conditions.

TYPICAL REQUIREMENTS

Training and Experience

  • Minimum associate degree in electrical or electronic engineering/technology or equivalent formal training. Additional formal education preferred.
  • Fully qualified requires eight years of related experience, including at least two years’ experience in the Meter Specialist position.
  • Must have a valid motor vehicle license.
  • Must be willing to work extended hours when necessary and perform Storm Duty assignment.

Fully Qualified Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of the application, test, and repair of solid-state meters and devices.
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring and electronic circuit diagrams
  • Ability to use oscilloscope and other diagnostic equipment.
  • Knowledge and understanding sufficient to apply and evaluate latest state-of the-art metering and electronic components.
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely. Understanding of principles of electric metering.
  • Ability to make difficult and on-the-spot decisions.
  • Working knowledge of computer hardware, software, and associated peripherals.
