Based on education and experience, this opportunity will be filled at either of these job titles/classifications:

Engineer Sr.

Engineer = bachelor's degree + typically two (2) years' experience

Position Summary: Responsible to the assigned supervisor for performing intermediate level engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe , effective, efficient and economic accomplishment of assigned objectives.

Principal Accountabilities :

  1. Technical Expertise:Demonstratescompetencyinanalyticaltechniquesnecessarytohandleassignmentsofmoderatecomplexity. (e.g.,bydividingtheproblemintocomponentsteps,andperformingtheanalysisnecessarytocompleteeachstep ). Exhibits ability to understand interrelationship between systems and component equipment . Demonstrateabilitytoanalyzeand recommend enhancements to business processes. Developandanalyzehistoricalrecordsofprojectcosts ; review and critique designs and specifications for cost effectiveness and suggests alternatives when appropriate

  2. Leadership&Guidance: Coordinatesworkactivitiesofotherswithintheworkgroup,department,orothercorporateentityasnecessarytocompleteroutineactivities. Follows policies,practices, standards and rules of the company and those regulations and procedures required by external agencies. Provides training andguidanceto lower-level employees.

  3. Planning & Organization Ability:Coordinatesthedevelopmentofinputnecessarytoforecastcosts for the routine projects, improvements requisitions,etc.Usesscheduling techniques (CPM, PERT, flow charts, etc.) for budget and planning activities. Initiates corrective action when project objectives are notbeingmet. Support project sponsors in development of conceptual estimates; collaborate with engineering, project management, and other stakeholders in the development of the detailed project scope of work; prepare detailed project cost estimates based on the approved scope of work.

  4. Problem Solving& Initiative: Resolvesandinitiatessolutionstoroutineproblemswhichusuallyrequire additional definition /clarification before analysis can begin . Demonstratesabilitytoidentifyproblemsthatarebeyondthenormalroutine. Demonstratesabilityanddesiretoseekoutopportunitiesandembracenewideasandapproaches.

  5. Communication: Develops, reviews, or presents technical reports such as improvement requisitions , studies, and analyses in as clear, concise and effective fashion. Be able to understand, analyze and apply the various costs associated with the construction of an electrical substations and/or Transmission Line.

  6. Interpersonal Skills: Is an active team member. Networks with peers inside and outside the AEP system. Identifies key stakeholders.. Resolves conflict, builds consensus.

  7. Decision Making: Makes decisions subject to review within established policies and procedures . Makes decisions that affect the work of the team. Aware of risks. Demonstrates the ability to extrapolate beyond known facts to reach logical conclusions .

  8. Business Awareness & Characteristics: Demonstrates an understanding of the budgeting and approval process. Is proficient in the application and use of economic analysis techniques in problem solving. Develops an understanding of utility regulation and financing. Adhere to standard processes and procedures for estimating; review estimate basis and assumptions for completeness and reasonableness . Work with functional departments and service organization to develop services labor estimates .

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum Requirements: Has typically acquired two (2) or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor’s degree in engineering in a program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)*; Individuals with a Master’s or Doctorate degree in engineering may be considered for entry into the organization at this level.

*Acceptable alternatives are (1) a Bachelor’s degree in engineering (non-ABET), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S. or (2) a Bachelor’s degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master’s degree in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor’s program.
