About Transmission and Distribution

Southern California Edison’s (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organizational Unit (T & D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 14 million residents via SCE’s 5 million customer accounts.

Position Overview

Develops layouts for components and systems and selects material. Prepares design drawings, calculations, and bills of material from engineering documents associated with the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the Company’s distribution system, and telecommunication system. Performs routine to moderately complex design assignments within a specific engineering discipline. Works closely with Planners and may provide functional direction to support staff. Provides information and makes recommendations having minor impact to the project.

TypicalResponsibilities may include:

  • Preparesscaled work order maps using computer aided design software (CAD) such asAutodesk Utility Design (AUD) and Design Manager (DM).

  • Drawsmap(s) using the correct mapping symbols, call-outs, decals, proper tie downs,etc.

  • ChecksPlanner’s redlines for accuracy and completeness prior to completing thedrafting/drawing.

  • Completesengineering functions and calculations based on field information and redlinefrom Planner (i.e., cable pulling, voltage drop, flicker, utilizing stationsheets, etc.).

  • Inputspole loading information in SPIDA software based on field information andredlines from Planner.

  • Preparesjoint pole authorizations based on field information and redline from Planner.

  • Inputscustomer, project, and billing information (i.e., completes faceplate, verifiesallowances, updates labor requirements).

  • Consultwith Planners and other planning personnel to prepare design drawings andmodifications as required.

  • Create and maintain a safetyconscious work environment by leading and influencing others to follow Edisonsafety protocols and safe work practices.

  • Perform other duties andresponsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • AutoCAD certificate from a school accredited bythe US Department of Education or an Associate's degree (A. S.) inAutoCAD.

  • Two or more years of experience providingsupport in any of the following fields: Drafting/Designing, Mapping, orelectrical distribution planning.

Desired Qualifications

  • Draftingand designing practices in CAD for electric utility, electrical distributiondesign, engineering design, or construction work preferred.

  • Handling multiple assignments concurrently,adjusting shifting priorities, and meeting deadlines.

  • Experienceworking with customers, identifying customer needs, and resolving customerissues.

  • Reviewingrough sketches, drawings specifications, and creating conceptual drawings incomputer aided design software.

  • Finalizingengineering product drawings with critical dimensions, performance specifications,and quality specifications to be in compliance with design standards andprocedures.

  • Conductingquality review on designs, checks for inaccuracies, omissions, or complianceissues and providing recommendations.

  • Ableto drive, traverse on unevensurfaces, occasionally lift upto 40 lbs., sit/stand for extended periods of time, work in various weather conditions, and possibly be in remoteregions (coast, desert, and mountain) for extended periods of time.

  • Abilityto integrate work across relevant areas, manage information, and provideexceptional service to internal and external customers.


  • Flexibilityto attend 2 weeks training in a facility which may differ from base location.

  • Candidatesfor this position must be legally authorized to work directly as employees forany employer in the United States without visa sponsorship.
