*Position Summary: *The Mantis Crane Operator is a skilled position in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical transmission systems.
Operate boom trucks and cranes.
Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized overhead work.
Maintain company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
Perform all other related work as required to complete the job.
Inspect the crane or boom truck.
Inspect cribbing and outriggers.
Drive and operate the cranes and boom trucks.
Oversee the set-up of the crane or boom truck.
Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized transmission work.
Must possess a valid Class A CDL.
Must possess a crane certified operator’s card.
Must possess a DOT certification.
Ability to read load charts and rigging.
Knowledge of correct rigging techniques.
Must be willing to learn all aspects of line work.
Must be competent in writing up lift plans.
3-5 years of experience required.
5-10 years of experience preferred.
Must be able to travel on short notices, including staying out of town when required.
Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when required.
Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
When not operating the crane or boom truck must assist Foreman and crew with:
o Shovel dirt
o Tamp pole holes
o Frame poles
Able to frequently use hand tools: wrenches, hammer screw drivers.
Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
Must be able to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
Must be able to work or be exposed to oil, grease, dirt, mud, dust, diesel fuel and fumes on a daily basis.
Must be able to work or be exposed to poison ivy, oak ticks, and snacks on a seasonal basis.
Willing to work over-time when requested.
Must learn the task/duties of a Groundman, Class C Lineman, and Heavy Equipment Operator. These are:
o Stringing overhead wire.
o Setting poles and anchors.
o Assisting with installing transformers, lightening arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, insulators, switches and switchgear.
o Assist in replacing fuses in transformers and clears faulted circuits and systems.
o Frequently working with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.
o Understanding proper use of company radio.
o Understanding operation of heavy equipment.
o Understanding basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying.
o Understanding the proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
o Capable of receiving and following directions.
o Capable of learning basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
o Possessing a basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
o Ability to identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
o Must be familiar with induced voltage.
o Capable of assisting with the installation and hook up of a single phase transformer.
o Capable of performing basic bucket rescue/escape.
o Understanding the basic concepts of equipment set up and grounding.
o Capable of working at heights and/or confined spaces.
o Understanding minimum approach distance.
o Capable of checking voltage on transformers.
o Understanding flag and tag procedures.
o Capable of installing and removing a service.
o Capable of properly inspecting rubber goods and PPE.
o Understanding when to wear personnel protective equipment.
o Capable of making up and using a hand line.
o Understands how and when to use Kellum grips.
o Ability to identify different types of materials used in line work.
o Capable of learning transmission voltages on a circuit.
o Capable of learning to understand and read blueprints.
o Capable of assisting with inspecting and recognizing structural problems.
o Ability to work productively from an aerial device.
o Capable of assisting in troubleshooting.
o Ability to work alone on de-energized lines.
o Capable of obtaining knowledge of wire stringing techniques.
o Capable of learning and understanding how to sag wire from structure or bucket.
o Ability to assist with assembly and erect towers to all heights.
o Ability to assist with working from an aerial ladder to catch off and clip in.
o Ability to assist in framing and setting most basic line structures.
o Ability to assist in framing a de-energized pole structure in the air.
o Ability to assist with installing all types of compression connections.
o Capable of properly installing and removing PPE and cover up.
o Must be able to climb different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.) and possess the necessary tools to do so.
o Understanding how to tie various lineman knots.
o Understanding proper equipment set-up and grounding procedures.
o Capable of performing basic bucket rescue/escape.
o Understanding DOT requirements (pre-trip/post trip inspections, etc.).
o Understanding basic rigging techniques.
o Possess a basic knowledge on safe use of chain saw, bush axe, etc.
o Understanding personal protective equipment requirements and wears PPE when and how it is needed.
o Understanding proper use and care of ladders.
o Ability to assist in pole framing, setting, and removal.
o Understanding how to safely set up a work zone.
o Ability to assist with structure assemble and disassembly.
o Possess a basic working knowledge of de-energized line work.
o Capable of safely setting a pole.
o Possess a basic knowledge of cover up.
o Possess knowledge of proper work zone set up.
o Possess knowledge of pole framing, setting and removal.

This position is performed in outside weather conditions.
