National Grid is hiring a Principal Engineer for our Gas Innovation Department in Melville, NY.

Job Purpose

The Principle Engineer will be required to oversee the goals of National Grid’s Gas Research, Development & Demonstration (RD&D) program, which is designed to improve the gas transmission and distribution network operations. This role will also work on targeted gas operations improvements involving enhanced public safety, cost reductions, improved worker safety and environmental compliance.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage the current portfolio of Gas RD&D projects (Project Management) while supporting Company initiatives and working to influence adaptation of these goals and expectations in a collaborative inter-utility environment

  • Act as the technical lead and main point of contact for all R&D efforts through consortiums (NYSEARCH, OTD, etc.), Joint Industry Projects (JIP), and internal R&D efforts.

  • Identify opportunities to participate in appropriate industry committees (AGA, NYSEARCH, GTI/OTD) · Support New Technology Development (“NTD”) team members as a mentor through this venue by introducing, socializing and providing demonstrations of new and emerging natural gas technologies for eventual day-to-day field use

  • Act as Program Administrator to effect timely review of proposals by Subject Matter Experts (SME), Legal and other stakeholders (as may be required)

  • Act as Contract Administrator to ensure processing of necessary payables in a timely fashion

  • Participate on Process Excellence teams to ensure the successful deployment of new gas technologies and pilot programs

  • Monitor and/or assess engineering and design working practices to ensure they are compliant with relevant regulations and revise standards as a result of recommendations by industry associations (e.g. ASME, ANSI, etc.)

  • Act as the first point of contact for internal and external customers or suppliers on issues associated with Gas RD&D projects/programs in order to provide support and ensure National Grid/business unit deliver against service level agreements

  • Evaluate and manage the implementation of new natural gas technologies and processes · Provide technical expertise and support to other National Grid Departments (e.g. Field Operations, Environmental, Legal, etc.)

  • Prepare Regulatory Filings and Reports in accordance with Regulatory requirements and Company needs

  • Prepare budgets to support Regulatory Filings and reports


  • Bachelor of Science Degree required in Engineering

  • 8+ years in engineering of gas utilities, or equivalent field operations experience

  • Gas utility or energy industry experience required

  • Experience in Research & Development and pilot testing / field deployment strategies preferred

  • Valid Drivers license required

  • Strong skills in strategic thinking, problem solving, communication, project management, computer and analytical skills

  • Exhibits high personal standards for commitment to safety, integrity and compliance

  • Self-Starter with the ability to work independently with little direction

  • Strong understanding of budgeting & estimating
