About the Opportunity

This is an open position with Ohio Edison Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [OEPP]

This position directs and supervises employees engaged in complex construction, maintenance, repair, testing and operation of transmission and distribution substation facilities and associated equipment as well as ducted underground network facilities and associated equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrating a solid commitment to all aspects of safety.

  • Implementing instruction and training of section employees in the established work practices and methods utilized throughout the department.

  • Conducting field surveys and preparing sketches and estimates of material and labor required in planning for various substation and ducted underground network construction and maintenance activities.

  • Requesting and coordinating the availability of necessary equipment, tools, materials and supplies.

  • Coordinating work with other departments and scheduling construction, maintenance, repair or test work.

  • Monitoring the activities of employees and enforcing conformance to established work practices and methods (according to Preferred Practices Manual, Accident Prevention Handbook, Safety Specifications and Construction Standards).

  • Demonstrating sound internal and external customer service.

  • Responding to and supervising resources during emergency conditions to support public safety and system reliability, as well as supervising and dispatching service restoration crews during major storms.

  • Monitoring and documenting work habits.

  • Counseling employees, recommending corrective actions o meet performance standards and acknowledging good work and work habits.

  • Administering Company and regional absenteeism management program and regional safety

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent with specialized training or 10 or more years equivalent experience.

  • Advanced experience in substation equipment maintenance and testing.

  • Some supervisory experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of applied electricity including AC and DC electrical circuits and equipment.

  • Knowledge of clearance and switching control procedures in the System Operations Department Manual of Operations, as well as the Company's preferred practices, methods and construction standards relating to transmission and distribution facilities.

  • Familiarity with general guidelines of the Environmental Protection Agency and local regulations as they pertain to construction, soil disturbance and proper clean-up, disposal and storage of oil filled devices.

  • Thorough knowledge of Company's General Safety Specifications and Accident Prevention Handbook.

  • Ability to learn various mainframe applications (CREWS, SAP, PowerOn AM/FM), as well as Microsoft Office.

  • Ability to read, alter and communicate complex prints and specifications to personnel.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

  • Effective leadership skills to communicate with and direct work of others to ensure safety and produce satisfactory work results.

  • Experience in a union environment, the ability to manage under the provisions of a union contract and apply all provisions without preference.

  • Questioning attitude to learn, produce results and develop relationships.

  • Ability to coach, mentor, engage and inspire people to excel in their roles.

  • Advanced knowledge of practices, principles of operation and the proper application of safety equipment, first aid and rescue.

  • Ability to set and communicate clear expectations, priorities and measures of success.

  • Solid understanding of National Electric Safety Code.

  • Possession of or ability to quickly obtain a valid commercial driver's license (CDL).

  • Ability to work in known and unknown environments and the ability to travel over developed and undeveloped terrain.

  • Ability to operate automobiles and trucks and, to a lesser extent, vocational equipment.
