The Mechanics-Lynchburg Department is responsible for the design and development of fuel and fuel related services and coordinates its activities with all other departments including manufacturing, nuclear engineering, procurement, project management, sales and marking, and fuel field services.

Mechanics-Lynchburg is an organization of primarily mechanical engineers having design ownership and mechanical structural analysis responsibility for nuclear fuel components and assemblies manufactured for US customers. A “Nuclear Fuel Design Engineer” fulfilling the requirements of this requisition will serve the role of “Product Owner” for a fuel design type and assure overall design requirements and product definition are met.

Framatome is seeking a Nuclear Fuel Mechanical Design Engineer - Product Owner in Lynchburg, VA. This highly motivated individual is needed to serve as a Product Owner for development of a new fuel design which includes strong global interaction and coordination. Additionally, the role supports existing Mechanical Product Development activities.

Responsibilities and duties include:

  • Plan and Implement R&D program for new fuel design that meets the company product strategy

  • Overall preparation/assembly of Engineering Requirements across disciplines (e.g., Mechanical, Thermal-Hydraulic, Thermal-Mechanical, Neutronic, Materials, etc.)

  • Define the engineering configuration of the product incorporating the overall strategy and anticipated mission/use in support of design, manufacturing and licensing activities in accordance with regulatory, industry and company quality requirements

  • Technical support/interface to bids, customers and stakeholders

  • Provide mechanical expertise for development programs and for direct manufacturing support

  • Overall coordination and integration of sub component performance to deliver and assure the performance of a product

  • Coordinate, integrate and communicate technical & development needs across Framatome divisions to support a common understanding of Engineering Requirements

  • Interface with different Framatome site locations, customer contacts, external suppliers, and licensing entities

  • Assist with development of product specifications & technical drawings for nuclear fuel components

  • Assist with development of Post-Irradiation Examination planning and dissemination of results to others and recommending improvement actions

  • Collect/receive manufacturing experience feedback for the product and take actions as necessary

  • Maintain an awareness of generic/industry issues related to nuclear fuel operation to apply as appropriate

  • Assist with development of project schedule

  • All candidates must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for this opportunity. Candidates who exceed minimum qualifications may be considered for a higher level position. *

  • Engineer III- BS in Mechanical Engineering, plus a minimum of 3-5 years of engineering experience in related field. An advanced degree may be substituted for related experience (MS 1-2 yrs. Or PhD 1-3 yrs.).

  • Engineer IV- BS in Mechanical Engineering, plus a minimum of 5-7 years of engineering experience in related field. An advanced degree may be substituted for related experience (MS 1-2 yrs. Or PhD 1-3 yrs.).

  • Principal Engineer- BS in Mechanical Engineering, plus a minimum of 7-10 years of engineering experience in related field. An advanced degree may be substituted for related experience (MS 1-2 yrs. Or PhD 1-3 yrs.).

  • Work experience with technical drawings, product specifications, design development, design requirements & compliance evaluations

  • Experience and expertise with nuclear materials and components, e.g. uranium, zirconium, nickel-based alloys, stainless steels, and UO2 ceramics, fuel rods, cage structures, and fuel assemblies

  • Basic knowledge of mechanical design and analysis principals and application of those principles

  • Possess excellent communication skills (oral / presentation / written)

  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others in a team environment, and coordinate activities among diverse groups to achieve desired results through Project

  • Technical Leader assignments

  • Ability to work in a fast paced and demanding design and manufacturing environment

  • Aptitude for taking on new challenges and developing in new technical areas

  • Under minimum immediate supervision, perform engineering tasks having varied levels of complexity

  • Good organizational, time management and project management skills

The following requirements are desired and will be used to differentiate all candidates who apply for this position.

  • Experience with metallic co-extrusion and metallic/diffusion bonding design or manufacturing

  • Understanding of manufacturing and qualification processes for nuclear materials and components

  • Engineering experience in the nuclear industry and familiarity with required engineering quality and controls in this industry

  • Project/design ownership skills and ability to cross technical disciplines to drive project to successful completion

  • Experience in scientific/technical code development, and in technical document preparation and review

  • French language skills

Travel:

Sporadic - 10% travel. Typical travel for this position is moderate, typically involving business trips to Framatome and vendor sites, or in support of an industry technical meeting.
