Lakeland Electric Equipment Operator II in Lakeland, Florida

This is highly skilled work in the operation of a wide variety of heavy and complex equipment used in roadway, drainage, utilities, and municipal construction and maintenance work. Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the heavy and complex types of construction and maintenance equipment used in the more difficult construction and maintenance operations. Employees in this classification may also oversee Equipment Operator I and perform manual tasks related to equipment operation. Work is reviewed by a supervisor through the inspection of work while in progress and upon completion. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS: * Operates all terrain excavator, vacuum truck, concrete truck, street sweeper, all terrain mower, slope mower, bobcat rubber tire backhoe, front-end loader, steel rollers, asphalt distributor and payloader, in addition to the skilled operation of motor grader, gradall and track hoe. * Drives and operates trucks and transports materials needed for projects, and keeps all equipment on trucks in working order. * Operates excavator in digging ditches, laying pipe and cutting down slopes. * Reads and interprets grade readings; cuts desired finish grade according to blueprint specifications. * Performs light maintenance and servicing in connection with the operation of heavy equipment. * Sets up and assists with televising municipal pipelines. * Installs internal point repairs in municipal pipelines. * Requires heavy work that involves lifting, shoveling, walking or standing most of the time, and carrying 35 to 100 pounds on a regular and recurring basis along with exerting up to 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis. ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: * Performs related work as required. QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE) AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: * High School diploma from an accredited school or its equivalent. * Three (3) years of experience in the operation of construction and maintenance equipment and heavy trucks. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: * Must possess and maintain a valid state of Florida driver's license. * Must be able to obtain Class "A" or "B" CDL with appropriate endorsements as are required by the employing department within six (6) months of employment. * Must pass and maintain training in: Traffic Control, Trenching and Shoring, and Confined Spaces within one (1) year of employment. * Must be available for emergency call outs. * Required to participate in the stand-by/call-out rotation to address problems after normal working hours and on weekends. * Required to pass and maintain qualifications for: * Respiratory Protection Physical * Pulmonary Function * Qualitative and Quantitative Fit Test(s). * May be required to work overtime, or alternate hours, as necessary for the efficient operation of the department. * Position may be designated as Mission Critical by Department Director. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: * Considerable knowledge of the general practices applied in the care and safe operation of a wide variety of heavy construction and maintenance equipment. * Considerable knowledge of the laws and regulations pertaining to the proper operation of equipment around utilities and upon roads, streets and alleys. * Skill in the operation of a wide variety of heavy equipment and trucks. * Ability to operate televising equipment to televise municipal pipelines. * Ability to maintain and make minor emergency repairs and adjustments to a wide variety of heavy equipment. * Ability to understand and follow oral instructions, written instructions and diagrams. * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the general public WORKING ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS: * The job requires heavy work that involves lifting, shoveling, walking or standing most of the time, and carrying 35 to 100 pounds on a regular and recurring basis along with exerting up to 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis. * The job risks exposure to bright/dim light, wet or humid conditions, disease, pathogens, extreme noise levels, traffic, toxic/caustic chemicals, fumes, noxious odors, moving machinery, heights, dusts, pollen, extreme cold and heat. * The job requires normal visual acuity, and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
