Senior Structural Engineer - Transmission

Position Summary

This position will be within the “Production Standards” team of Transmission Engineering for Duke Energy Florida (DEF). This workgroup will directly support the three DEF Transmission Engineering Units (Substation, Transmission Line, and Protection & Control) by developing and maintaining design standard drawings that are used to perform the physical design of electric power substations, transmission lines, and their protection and control schemes. The position utilizes a variety of tools and techniques in order to complete an engineering design standard, including new Standard Positions Statements (SPS), Standard Interpretations (SI), current design specifications, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources. This position specifically is for a structural engineer to help create/maintain structural and foundation production standard designs for substations and transmission lines.

The individual will work with a team in order to develop detailed standard drawings packages. Should have a background in design, project coordination and an understanding of project scheduling processes to assist their engineering peers through the process of developing or updating a design standard. Will utilize a variety of tools and techniques in order to assist their peers with completing an engineering design, including current design specifications, applicable Standard Position Statements, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources. He/she will also review early project estimates and scope documents of requested work to ensure that engineering is directed properly from project inception. Additionally, the person in this position will work with team members in developing their expertise in Transmission Line and Substation design principles based on current and evolving standards (IEEE, NERC, NESC, NEC, ASCE, ACI, etc.). The person in this position must be able to manage multiple projects in various stages of design so as to meet project schedule deadlines; provide support to engineering personnel during project implementation; and develop and maintain a sufficient level of expertise in use of CAD software for efficient completion of production standards work. This person will work with other organizations in developing Production Standards that meet the requirements of our Standards Positions Statements and the needs of our Engineering units.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Engineering obtained from an ABET accredited program, OR state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE), OR a Master’s degree in Engineering in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering

Minimum of six (6) years of engineering experience, OR five (5) years of experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE)

State Registration as a PE is required

Desired Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering is strongly desired

Experience in Substation or Line Construction and/or maintenance

Demonstrated proficiency with engineering computer packages – AutoCAD, Inventor, Civil 3D, AutoCAD Electrical, PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, MFAD

Experience maintaining structural standards.

Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in priorities, and remain calm and effective in stressful situations.

Demonstrated ability to meet required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks.

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, partners, customers, and the public by adapting to various personality styles in a professional manner.

Experience and demonstrated written and oral communications skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings and provide direction to others.

Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Understanding of basic principles of project management

PE and SE licensure.
