This position is in the Duke Energy Florida (DEF) Lake Mary, FL. This position will be within the “Production Standards” team of Transmission Engineering for DEF. This workgroup will directly support the three DEF Transmission Engineering Units (Substation, Transmission Line, and Protection & Control) by developing and maintaining design standard drawings that are used to perform the physical design of electric power substations, transmission lines, and their protection and control schemes. This workgroup will also be responsible for developing materials listings that support the standard designs, including the creation and maintenance of compatible units (CU’s), when needed. The position requires coordinating work with peers and other workgroups to support the timely completion of updated or new design standards. The position utilizes a variety of tools and techniques to complete an engineering design standard, including new Standard Positions Statements (SPS), Standards Interpretations (SI), current design specifications, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources. This position is specifically for an experienced engineer to develop and maintain production standards for the Protection and Controls Engineering portion of the team.The person in this position will work with team members to develop detailed standards for layouts of control equipment enclosures, detailed elementary, schematic and wiring diagram drawings and plans required for construction of substation projects. The individual should have a background in design, project coordination and an understanding of project scheduling processes to assist their engineering peers through the process of developing or updating a design standard. The work performed by this unit requires an understanding of power systems, transformers, protective relaying and electrical engineering principles. The person will be involved in the development and review of designs for high voltage substations at voltages of 13kV, 115kV, 230kV and 500kV. Additionally, the person in this position will be expected to continue developing their expertise in protective relay settings calculations and analysis based on current and evolving standards (IEEE, NERC, etc.). The person in this position must be able to manage multiple projects in various stages of design to meet project schedule deadlines; provide support to engineering personnel during project implementation; and develop and maintain a sufficient level of expertise in use of CAD software for efficient completion of production standards work. This person will work with other organizations in developing standards and communication plans for implementation that meet the requirements of our System Standards and the needs of our Engineering units.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility,

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results,

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity,

  • Conducts engineering and related studies,

  • Completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems,

  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity,

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities,

  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills,

  • Maintains accurate records and files, and

  • Supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering obtained from an ABET accredited program, OR state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE), OR a Master’s degree in Engineering in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering

  • Minimum of six (6) years of engineering experience, OR five (5) years of experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE)

  • State Registration as a Professional Engineer is Required

Desired Qualifications

  • Electrical Engineering degree preferred - the concepts of protection schemes requires an understanding of symmetrical components and energy flow calculations.

  • A master’s degree in engineering preferred.

  • Demonstrated good understanding of electric utility electric utility protection and control standards and the ability to produce construction documents

  • Demonstrated knowledge of potential environmental impacts of transmission facilities and experience mitigating them

  • Demonstrated proficiency with engineering computer packages –AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, WinIGS

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in priorities, and remain calm and effective in stressful situations.

  • Demonstrated ability to meet required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, partners, customers, and the public by adapting to various personality styles in a professional manner.

  • Experience and demonstrated written and oral communications skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings and provide direction to others.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Understanding of basic principles of project management
