General Job Description:

The Turbine Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient and continuous operation of the turbine area which includes the two coal-fired boilers and turbine auxiliary equipment. Turbine Operators operate/monitor the equipment and make minor adjustments as necessary. Turbine Operators work on assigned shifts and maintain shift records and record changes in operation that can lead to possible problems.

Job Requirements:

  • Able to operate various mechanical and electrical systems which include high pressure steam systems, auxiliary steam systems, combustion air systems, plant and control air systems, fuel systems, fabric filter baghouse, ash handling equipment, cooling water systems, feed water systems, and other auxiliary systems.

  • Able to identify equipment problems, report abnormal conditions and document properly using logs, records, and our work request system.

  • Able to read and interpret basic blue prints, technical specifications and operating manuals.

  • Able to understand and ensure electrical and mechanical equipment are de-energized and made safe for working conditions as required. Ensure appropriate permits are prepared as required by the jobs.

  • Conduct routine rounds on equipment to ensure proper operation of equipment.

  • Assist maintenance when necessary to support overall maintenance of plant.

  • Area housekeeping as required.

  • Ensure area is kept safe and environmentally sound, report any problems immediately.

  • Participate in area meetings, training and other plant meetings when applicable.


  • High school degree or equivalent education.

  • Experience related to power plant operation and maintenance.

  • Experience with generators, boilers, steam and water systems.

  • Able to work rotating shifts.

  • Must be highly motivated and work with limited supervision.

Physical Skills

Work requires accuracy and a regular sequence of muscular motions and coordination. Performance such as the manual adjustment of control systems operation of heavy equipment and other physical tasks.

Physical Effort

Work may require considerable physical effort with frequent periods of heavy physical effort (lifting 50-100 pounds) and strained work positions. Considerable fatigue may be experienced.

Interdepartmental Work

Work involves regular contact with other departments such as maintenance areas involving removing equipment from service and making adjustments to operating equipment limited to established procedures.
