We are currently seeking a Director of Engineering for our Kanata facility.
Job Description: Director of Engineering
Directs the planning, implementation and maintenance of all engineering activities for existing BWXT Medical assets in addition to all equipment and facility modifications that are required for new products at both the Ottawa and Vancouver facilities. Oversee all capital projects from initial concept to delivery of a validated facility. Formulates and recommends engineering policies and programs. Develops budgets for labour, and manages capital expenditures. Manages and coordinates the activities of the other sections of the Engineering, Facilities Maintenance and Development through subordinates.
For the value-based maintenance and calibration of the facility and equipment to minimize outages and for responding to and resolving failures in a timely manner as to minimize the impact on product availability.
For developing the CapEx strategy and assembling the necessary documentation for the approval for the capital program.
For the on time, to cost delivery of all site capital projects to the agreed scope.
For the establishment and optimization of the department fixed cost, variable cost and capital budgets striving to achieve maximum value – Reporting against and justifying variances.
For compliance with the BWXT Medical standards for Quality and EH&S, for establishment and maintenance of the engineering systems that are generated to facilitate compliance.
For supporting the commercial function in the assessment of new opportunities and providing appropriate engineering and process input for all new project opportunities.
Essential Job Functions
Makes decisions, based on the professional judgment, experience, budget, cGMP regulations, Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the ethical guidelines of good business practices.
Proactively seek out process and product risks and optimization opportunities and raise them to the management team, along with resolution plans
Proactively develops and sustains strong relationships with a wide range of engineering subcontractors and automation firms.
Active participation in labour negotiations
Review and approve IQ/OQ/PQ documents as the system owner for facilities.
Evaluates the functional strengths and developmental areas in the Engineering organization and focuses on continuous improvement.
Manages team of supervisors and professionals within Engineering. Hires and develops employees within the department in support of site objectives
Work with internal stakeholders in manufacturing, process development, project management etc. to facilitate successful customer project delivery.
To inspire new ways of thinking to the Engineering, Operations & Quality group both in terms of the facility design and layout but also more fundamentally in terms of efficient team operation, production processes and role flexibility.
The Facilities Manager, Administrative Assistant, Manager of Process Engineering and Manager(s) of Development Engineering
Education and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Process, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or related field). Advanced degree preferred with at least 10 years of facilities and engineering or building operations experience in the biotechnology, nuclear or pharmaceutical industry.
Project Management Experience, in working with design and construction firms in modifying and building facilities.
Able to build, manage and inspire a highly motivated and skilled team.
Experience in pharmaceutical and/or biopharmaceutical industry facility ramp up and equipment layout, installation and calibration. Experience with radiopharmaceutical facilities is preferred.
Experience with utilities, engineering, maintenance, automation, computerized systems and validation activities in a cGMP environment.
Knowledge of and the ability to read, analyze and interpret updates on local, provincial and federal regulations
Must understand pharmaceutical manufacturing systems for their impact on the environment, and personnel and process safety.
Excellent organizational skills and an ability to work independently and prioritize effectively to deliver results within aggressive timelines.
Ability to work across multiple sites in a collaborative.
Strong interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication are essential.
The individual selected for this role must be an extremely strong leader, who engages individuals and promotes teamwork.
Ability to work by influencing piers and their reports and gain their cooperation in dealing with multiple priorities in the execution of projects.

This role will be based primarily in Ottawa but with significant oversite of the Vancouver Operations site.
