Position Specific Description

Job Overview:

NextEra Energy, a leading clean energy company, is seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Director of Operations to oversee the field operations, maintenance, and the 24x7 real-time control center operations for multiple operating companies across North America within the NextEra Energy Transmission division. This job is responsible for directing and managing a team responsible for the safe, reliable and cost-effective operations of transmission, substation, protection and control operations across North America (outside of Florida). Leaders in this role provide oversight and leadership in the development and implementation of standardized work practices and efficient execution of programs. This critical role plays a pivotal part in ensuring smooth and efficient operations and maintaining the uninterrupted supply of electricity.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Planning: Develop and implement strategic plans and initiatives for the smooth operation of field activities, maintenance, and real-time control center operations. Continuously evaluate and adjust operational strategies to ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices.

  • Budgeting and Financial Management: Oversee budget planning and financial forecasting for the department, ensuring optimal resource allocation and cost-effectiveness. Monitor expenses, identify areas for cost savings, and implement strategies to maximize operational efficiency.

  • Field Operations Management: Provide leadership and direction to field operations teams, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, regulatory compliance, and efficiency benchmarks. Foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation to enhance operational performance.

  • Maintenance Oversight: Develop and implement effective maintenance and asset management programs, ensuring the reliability and longevity of assets within the NextEra Energy Transmission portfolio. Collaborate closely with teams to schedule and prioritize maintenance activities, minimizing downtime and optimizing asset performance.

  • Real-Time Control Center Operations: Direct the 24x7 real-time control center operations, ensuring efficient monitoring, control, and response to grid operations. Implement technologies and systems to enhance grid reliability and security while facilitating the integration of new generation/energy sources.

  • Compliance Management: Ensure compliance to all NERC reliability standards in the various regions throughout North America. Manage compliance to construction specifications, operating standards and procedures.

  • Employee Engagement: Foster a positive and inclusive work environment, promoting employee engagement, growth, and development. Provide guidance, coaching, and performance feedback to direct reports, cultivating a high-performing team. Develop and mentor employees to build additional capabilities within the team and provide leadership and growth opportunities to teammates.

  • Growth: Coordinates with NextEra Energy Transmission development team to support bid responses, testimony and overall strategy to potential new and existing projects as part of the overall growth strategy for NextEra Energy Transmission.

  • Quality Improvement: Champion and promote quality concepts and innovation, and aid in the development of the field engineering team and system operations and continuously evaluate and improve the execution of critical operation and maintenance processes.

  • Collaboration and Stakeholder Management: Partner with cross-functional teams, including executives, regulatory bodies, and external stakeholders, to ensure alignment of operational goals, compliance with regulations, and effective communication. Represent NextEra Energy Transmission in industry forums and conferences, sharing knowledge and thought leadership.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Competencies:

  • Proven experience (minimum 10 years) in operational leadership roles within the energy industry, with specific experience in transmission operations or a related field.

  • Strong knowledge of transmission operations, maintenance practices, and real-time control center operations.

  • Demonstrated budgeting and financial management skills, with experience in planning and overseeing operational budgets.

  • Excellent leadership and people management abilities, with a track record of building and developing high-performing teams.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, coupled with the ability to make data-driven decisions.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.

  • Demonstrated ability to drive innovation and continuous improvement in operational processes.

  • Knowledge of industry regulations, compliance requirements, and emerging technologies in the energy sector.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and effectively manage multiple priorities.
