This position is within the Substation Design & Standards (SD&S) Division of the High Voltage Distribution (HVD) Engineering Department. The division is responsible for all electric substation engineering and design for both the high- and low-voltage distribution systems of Consumers Energy.
The Technician will complete civil / structural designs for substations of varying complexity utilizing MicroStation CAD software, system standards and through interpretation of existing / new drawings. The majority of employee's work to be completed in office but some field work will be required. Drafting Experience is required utilizing MicroStation or AutoCAD etc. 3D site design experience is a plus specifically utilizing MicroStation InRoads or AutoCAD Civil 3D. Previous experience implementing design standards and selecting appropriate substation civil materials is preferred.
Primary responsibility of the position:
Includes the completion of substation civil drawings including but not limited to foundation layouts, steel layouts and details, site restoration and grading. Material selection will also be required utilizing standards. Other duties may include the inspection of electrical substation spill prevention plans for recertification and giving engineering support to internal and external clients for construction projects designed by the employee (by phone or on-site). Additionally, requirements are to support storm restoration in a designated role. This position’s preferred location is in Jackson, Michigan. Position will be filled at the appropriate salary grade based upon the skills, knowledge, and experience of the selected candidate.
Candidate must possess a two-year associate degree, or higher in the requisite scientific or technical field (48 scientific or technical credit hours as measured on a semester basis). Civil Design Background (preferred).

Receives reports, electrical diagrams, and correspondence; reviews, processes or; maintains documentation for reference.
Consults with manufacturers' service technicians, contractors, and vendor representatives to discuss problems, schedule installs, and evaluate costs for necessary parts, supplies, or repairs.
Performs other related duties as required.
Review, edit, develop, manage, and interpret documents and drawings utilized for the purposes of maintaining, constructing, testing, and removing equipment and facilities for plant, electric and gas distribution and transmission systems.
Make design decisions with regard to electronic, electrical, mechanical, civil, and structural aspects of equipment and facilities utilized for plant, electric, and gas distribution and transmission.
Consults with supervisors, operators, technicians, manufacturers, vendors, subject matter experts and engineers to review assigned area needs, discuss problems, prioritize work, and provide technical expertise.
Be able to analyze complex problems, recommend alternatives and take corrective action.
