About Transmission and Distribution

Southern California Edison’s (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organizational Unit (T & D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 14 million residents via SCE’s 5 million customer accounts.

Position Overview:

SCE has launched the Reliability Operations Center in 2017. With the advent of more smart devices on the grid, analytics can play a role in troubleshooting issues real time and reducing customer outage times. The position of the Power System Operator (PSO) 3 will help design and develop reliability strategy for T&D. The PSO will monitor and suggest troubleshooting strategies to our field organizations and support data diagnostics and analytics to determine fault location, predictive failure analysis, and other future technologies. The PSO will coordinate among multiple disciplines such as engineering, system operations, field crews and dispatching.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Identify system disturbances and leading indicators of impending failures or additional insights while remotely troubleshooting specific outage incidents.

  • Recommend new processes and build tools designed to increase reliability and efficiency using information gathered from trends, patterns, low/flickering voltage, and related conditions.

  • Analyze telemetry across multiple independent systems such as the Energy Management System (EMS), Distribution Management System (DMS), OMS and network management system (AMI Smart Meter) to identify issues and analyze trends.

  • Work with T&D partner organizations (distribution, engineering, mapping, SC&M, etc.) to prioritize abnormalities-- particularly those requiring repair and/or reconfiguration of our circuitry and equipment

  • Direct Material Performance Failure Reports (MPFRs), identify root causes, and recommend a corrective action deployment approach

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Seven years or more work experience in electric systems operations, troubleshooting and/or engineering

  • Available to work a rotating shift or fixed hours, along with storm support, including weekends and holidays.

Desired qualifications:

  • 8 years or more of electrical engineering experience

  • Proficient working with applications such as: Outage Management Systems (OMS), Energy Management System (EMS), Distribution Management System (DMS), and Network Management System for AMI meters.

  • 8 years or more of experience in the capacity of distribution or transmission system operator, lineman, or troubleshooter.

  • Demonstrate experience effectively communicating technical or complex information to others with diverse backgrounds.

  • Knowledge in computer science (Python, SQL, R)
