AES Electrical Engineer (Construction) in Indiana

Position Summary:

This position performs electrical system design, construction and commissioning activities in support of electric generating power plant capital improvement, modification, retrofit, or new construction projects. As part of a project team, will have engineering responsibilities for equipment design, specification, and installation to meet project requirements. Involved in project activities from initial planning and budget estimating, through project design, installation, commissioning, and project close-out. Coordinates, provides design inputs, and performs design review and detailed checks when design is performed by outside party.

Primary Duties:

  • Performs engineering review for compliance with project requirements, codes, standards, and engineering practice.

  • To monitor project progress, adherence to contract specifications and quality standards

  • Conducts site surveys to gather field data, verify condition, and requirements.

  • Develop plant level electrical design documentation such as high level and detail plant HV, MV single lines & three-line w/protection, instrumentation & metering details, interlocking scheme as well as LV & DC distribution system for modifications and retrofits in power plant..

  • Marks up existing drawings and/or has new drawings created for detailing project work.

  • Design interconnect cabling and layout cable trays including BOM development.

  • Specifies material, equipment, installation/construction, quality assurance and inspection for the project work.

  • Identifies and specifies items for demolition or abandonment of cabling and other electrical components, and method or condition of abandonment.

  • Coordinates with project manager, project team, plant members, and other business units and stakeholders to execute the project work.

  • Communicates and coordinates with suppliers, vendors, and installation contractors.

  • Coordinates factory acceptance tests.

  • Reviews and approves final/as built drawings and records and assures accurate and complete drawings/records/documents are archived for asset configuration control.

  • Reviews, comments on, and approves vendor or third party supplied design, material, equipment, and drawings.

  • Provide technical support during Installation, commissioning and start-up / testing activities.

  • Review of commissioning documentation, scopes of work, technical requirements, specifications, safety procedures, and switching schedules.

  • Management of acceptance test plans to ensure that all systems are adequately tested and commissioned. Particular attention is to be paid to all aspects of electrical safety.

  • Ensure commissioning activities are undertaken in compliance with relevant standards, the contract specifications, and scopes of work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering/Electric Power, with a minimum of 8 years of experience in electric power plants and the electric power utilities industry.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel a must. Knowledgeable in Mathcad, Engineering Drawing Systems and Microsoft Project.

  • Experience in design review, erection supervision, inspection, testing and commissioning of the following related to power plants, (i) MV/LV switchgear, (ii) Control & Protection, (iii) MV/LV Cables, (iv) Motors/drives, (v) Earthing system, etc.

  • Experience commissioning and troubleshooting of electrical systems.

  • Ability to interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, control diagrams and apply NFPA 70E standards.

  • Experience troubleshooting low, med, and high voltage equipment including switchgear, motors, motor starter, VFD, soft starters, breakers, and electrical controls.

  • Experience with troubleshooting DC power distribution systems and controls.

  • Trained and familiar with NFPA 70E standards.
