Environmental, Health, and Safety manages Duke Energy’s overall environmental program including functions of Governance, Environmental Compliance, and Scientific Services. A successful intern will assist in designing and conducting scientific studies and analyses to support the safe and efficient operation of Duke Energy generation facilities, gas operations, and electric transmission/distribution grid. Students will work within the larger Environmental Science organization to help investigate and resolve various scientific and technical problems throughout the company.

Responsibilities

  • Work in the field or laboratory completing procedure driven work in support of sample collection or analysis

  • Interpret analytical results and assist in preparing technical reports as needed

  • Help with the collection and interpretation of samples and data to provide guidance to all business units to ensure compliance with governmental regulations and industry guidelines

  • Develop and oversee the use of appropriate sampling and monitoring procedures and guidelines

  • Interface with multiple levels within the EHS organization and business units that we support

  • Prepare and review technical documents for regulatory, audit, and other groups

  • Coordinate activities related to assigned scientific projects, programs, and operational systems

Basic Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled and pursuing a four-year degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Technology and Management, Fisheries, Wildlife, Conservation Biology, Natural Resources, Natural Resource Management, Applied Ecology, Water Quality and Water Resources, or Chemistry.

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75

  • Valid driver’s license

Desired Qualifications

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0

  • Familiarization with lab safety protocol and procedures

  • Aptitude and ability to work safely, according to procedure, and demonstrated focus on safety related instruction and expectation

  • Exceptional time management skills

  • Demonstrated aptitude in the environmental sciences

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, e.g. influencing and listening skills to deal effectively with co-workers and management

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated willingness to learn EHS and department programs and procedures

  • Ability to analyze data and develop appropriate strategic responses

  • Demonstrated extracurricular activities, including in a leadership role

  • Must be an energetic, motivated individual with a positive attitude that functions well in a challenging work environment and can accept and manage change effectively

    Working Conditions

  • Onsite - Work will be performed at a company facility.
