Job Summary:

NRG’s West Power Desk is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to join our team. The successful candidate will focus on various growth initiatives while developing and implementing physical trading strategies. Specifically, the position will be responsible for trading and scheduling physical power across Western markets with various counterparties and ISOs. Location: Houston or Calgary preferred, but open to other NRG Office locations

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute physical/financial trading strategies with a focus on the Pacific Northwest and the Desert Southwest

  • In coordination with internal support teams, work with counterparties and transmission providers to establish enabling agreements as required

  • Deploy risk to generate P&L while adhering to internal risk limits and internal trading compliance requirements

  • Develop comprehensive models to analyze commodity markets, price new business opportunities and advise customers

  • Assist Regulatory and Compliance Teams as required to ensure a prompt and comprehensive response to regulatory developments as well as timely compliance to existing regulations

  • Provide research as needed to identify possible strategic business opportunities

  • Support NRG’s retail customer business as required

Minimum Requirements:

  • Experience trading and scheduling physical power in the Pacific Northwest and/or the Desert Southwest

  • Proven knowledge of power market fundamentals, with expert understanding of Western physical markets

  • Strong spreadsheet, programming, and presentation skills

  • Strong analytical skills with strong IT and/or data management skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree, preferable in mathematics, engineering, or other quantitative field from an accredited college or university

  • Experience in establishing credit with transmission providers and counterparties

  • Possess a strong network of established WECC counterparty relationships

  • Previous experience in scheduling and NERC e-tagging physical power transactions

  • Proficient coder of SQL, and an object-oriented programming language (Ruby, Python, VBA)

  • Ability to work with customers and people at all levels of the organization

  • Strong team player with ability to take initiative and work independently

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and adhere to deadlines while maintaining attention to detail

  • Must be a creative thinker with strong investigative and analytical skills

Working Conditions:

  • Evening and weekend work, while not the norm, may be required as business needs dictate
