Summary

The successful candidate will play an integral role in mitigating legal risks by managing the flow, review, and execution of contracts to support business growth. The candidate will also play an important role in helping the Legal Department to stand-up an effective, fit-for-purpose regulatory compliance plan for Spire Inc.’s non-utility businesses.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day paralegal and contract support to the Houston-based legal team supporting Spire’s gas trading and gas midstream business units,

  • Enhance and manage systems to facilitate the negotiation of commercial contracts including management of negotiation logistics between Spire lawyers and counterparty’s contracts and legal team;

  • Maintain the legal library of contracts, regulatory filings and other key business records;

  • Develop strong relationships with counterparts at companies with which Spire does or intends to transact;

  • Provide compliance management support and content development support for the company’s fit-for-purpose compliance program;

  • Develop and manage systems to facilitate timely and accurate regulatory reporting across the company’s trading and midstream business units;

  • Develop and maintain new systems to record compliance incidents and manage the flow of internal investigations, as applicable;

  • As requested, assist Spire in conducting confidential internal regulatory compliance investigations of compliance incidents;

  • Provide administrative assistance and support to the Legal Department;

  • Perform other responsibilities, as assigned, that help further the development of, expansion of, or changes in Spire Inc.’s businesses.

Required Education (certifications, licenses)

  • BA/BS degree required

  • Paralegal certificate or other legal education training preferred

Required knowledge, skill and abilities

  • The successful candidate will have experience working in other commodity trading organizations and/or large compliance departments with exposure to federal and state regulatory issues. The candidate must have strong attention to detail and be able to manage multiple requests and demands of a dynamic work environment where priorities may routinely shift in response to market demands.

  • Experience with applicable regulations of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (“FERC”) and/or the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (“CFTC”), and the set-up of NAESB Contracts and/or gas transportation agreements is strongly preferred.

  • Minimum seven (7) years of paralegal and/or legal assistant experience

  • Demonstrated ability to build lasting professional relationships with internal colleagues and executive management

  • Research capabilities on Lexis-Nexis or Westlaw

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Meeting and event planning capabilities

  • Strong interpersonal skills to interface with commercial facing colleagues

  • Ability to be a “taskmaster” to keep stated goals and objectives on track to completion by or before established deadlines

  • Must demonstrate integrity, decisiveness and good judgment under pressure

  • Ability to manage a diverse and demanding workload, work independently and as a member of a team

  • Strong ambition to learn and ability to communicate with people of different professional backgrounds

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required

  • Superior analytical skills are required

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Must be willing to travel, as necessary

Physical demands, environment and schedule

  • Job is preformed in a typical office environment, but is subject to time pressures and constraints, and is often dependent on input from others

  • Occasionally, work may be performed from home, after normal work hours or on weekends

  • Periodically travel as business requires

  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing, per applicable federal regulations
