The Engineer will provide oversight, guidance, and technical support in the operation and maintenance of gas production and storage wells in the Battle Creek, Box Elder, and Bear Paw Basin fields. Major focus of the position is the optimization of gas production using downhole improvements and artificial lift systems. The Engineer will also be involved in a variety of areas including system and field operations, design engineering of surface facilities, measurement and regulation, construction, maintenance and gas processing. The Engineer will work with other departments within the company such as environmental, accounting, land department, and regulatory. The primary work location is in and around the Havre Gas Production area of operations in Havre Montana

  • Ensure all actions are consistent with NorthWestern Energy's values, mission, and strategic business objectives

  • Oversight of the operation and maintenance of low and high pressure natural gas production and storage wells, surface facilities, compressors, dehydration equipment, and related gas measurement.

  • Provide engineering design, support, training and troubleshooting related to oil and gas wells and facilities.

  • Perform economic evaluations, develop budget items and evaluate new products and services.

  • Maintain Risk Models for storage wells, abandonments, and workovers

  • Provide on-site technical assistance as needed

  • Focus on the evaluation and optimization of the down hole performance of the wells

  • Ensure compliance with all environmental regulations, EPA, DEQ or NWE.

  • Supervision of field operations personnel

  • Engineer will perform all of the above in accordance with all OSHA, DOT and NorthWestern Energy safety rules, policies, and procedures

  • Engineer will be responsible for budgeting capital and expense items and over sight of projects to insure the projects meet company standards, budgets and time schedules.

  • Supervise projects and oversee contract and field operation crews

  • Perform computer related functions such as engineering analysis, drawing, spreadsheets, and database compilations

  • Compile and write technical reports

  • Nature of the job requires the ability to respond to call outs, therefore the engineer is required to live within 30 minutes of the Havre gas department office

  • Travel up to 30% and extended hours may be required

  • Requires lifting up to 35 pounds and various other physical activities in a variety of weather extremes and occasional exposure to various field hazards and chemicals


  • Demonstrate and maintain a good safety record

  • Possess strong interpersonal communication skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering required (Mechanical, Civil, Petroleum, Chemical) Petroleum Preferred

  • Demonstrated knowledge through experience or training in the operation and maintenance of gas compressors, wells, dehydration equipment, and all related equipment required

  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills required to supervise field operations

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Possess a valid Driver's License and a clean driving record

  • Demonstrate a self-motivated attitude and be able to handle multiple conflicting tasks and assignments
