NiSource NERC Compliance Engineer/Specialist in Hammond, Indiana

NERC Compliance Eng/Spec

Job Summary: This position evaluates, develops and implements Compliance activities for the NIPSCO Electric Transmission, Generation Dispatch, Energy Management groups and others as designated in order to keep NIPSCO in compliance with Federal and State regulatory requirements, North American Electric Reliability Corp (NERC), Reliability First (RF), Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) and others as required. This position is also responsible for evaluating, developing and implementing strategies pertaining to corporate compliance associated with the Electric Transmission, Generation Dispatch and Energy Management groups, and others as designated to keep NIPSCO in conformity with Federal and State Compliance regulations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates and assists in reviewing the NIPSCO plan pertaining to Compliance Policy

  • Conducts Compliance oversight activities to keep NIPSCO in compliance with Federal and State regulatory requirements, NERC, RF and MISO rules/regulations/standards/guidelines

  • Supports the NIPSCO Compliance activities associated with State and Federal guidelines and laws where applicable. Maintains constant vigil over current and evolving state and federal laws and communicates possible courses of action regarding future Compliance Policy and assists with action plans for those affected

  • Supports the maintenance and improvement of systems and software programs used by NERC Compliance personnel

  • Participates in various committees pertaining to Compliance

  • Travels as necessary

  • Complies with all professional training and ethics policies

  • Completes and manages various projects as assigned

  • Assists in the building of comprehensive Reliability Standard Audit Work Sheets (RSAW)

  • Works with various Subject Matter Experts to obtain information to prove compliance

  • Keeps informed of upcoming standards and communicates changes to Subject Matter Experts

  • Provides evidence for periodic Self-Certifications and Quarterly Data Submittals

This position will be filled as an Engineer or Specialist depending on experience and degree.

Qualifications

Engineer/Specialist 1

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Business, Law or electric utility experience.

  • Ability to work with various SMEs (Subject Matter Experts)

  • Ability to perform duties and communicate effectively under normal, emergency and contingency situations

  • Ability to conduct NERC standards stakeholder voting, NATF engagement, MISO drills, ANOPR's and NOPR's

  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Desired Qualifications :

  • Experience in both the State and Federal regulatory arena

  • Firm understanding of electric utility operations

  • Working knowledge of RF, NERC, and FERC Compliance

  • Strong operations, financial and legal application background

  • Project Management knowledge.

  • PMP Certification

  • Understanding of basic engineering/technical theories and principles

  • General understanding of NERC Compliance principles and standards. Able to provide assistance with NERC Compliance training across the organization

  • Basic ability to build of comprehensive Reliability Audit Work Sheets (RSAW)

  • Basic knowledge of Utility Operations, Rates, Tariffs, Energy Trading, State and Federal regulations, NERC Standards, and company procedures

  • Ability to use NIPSCO’s Operations tools (NICE, eso1, TOA, Confluence, DMS, Archer GRC)

Engineer/Specialist 2

All of the qualifications for NERC Compliance Engineer/Specialist I including the following:

  • Increased ability in understanding of NERC Compliance principles and standards. Able to provide NERC Compliance training across the organization

  • Able to independently conduct compliance oversight activities to keep NIPSCO in compliance with Federal and State, NERC, RF and MISO rules/regulations/standards/guidelines

  • Increased ability in working with various SMEs (Subject Matter Experts)

  • Specific knowledge of Utility Operations, Rates, Tariffs, Energy Trading, State and Federal regulations, NERC Standards, and company procedures

  • Increased ability to perform duties and communicate effectively under normal, emergency and contingency situations

  • Advanced ability to build of comprehensive Reliability Audit Work Sheets (RSAW)

  • Ability to conduct NERC standards stakeholder voting, NATF engagement, MISO drills, ANOPR's and NOPR's

  • Increased proficiency in use of PC applications (MS Office Suite, MS Visio, Adobe PDF)

  • NERC System Operator certification

  • Increased understanding of principles of project management

Engineer/Specialist 3

All of the qualifications for NERC Compliance Engineer 2 including the following:

  • Increased ability in understanding of NERC Compliance principles and standards. Able to provide NERC Compliance training across the organization

This role will be filled based on the candidate's work history and education. Below are the different levels:

  • Engineer Level I / NERC Compliance Specialist 1

  • Engineer Level II / NERC Compliance Specialist 2

  • Engineer Level III / Specialist III

  • Sr. Engineer / Sr. Specialist

This position is considered a "Hybrid" position and reports to the Hammond office on Tuesday & Wednesday each week
