Position Summary

Fleet is partnering with local colleges and schools to expose students to Fleet Technician work at an Electric Utility. Most students in the automotive sciences are focusing on light duty cars and truck and very few consider moving into the Heavy Duty field. Our goal is to provide internship opportunities and identify potential candidates for future fleet technician positions at Duke Energy.


  • Perform light duty preventive maintenance and associated non-technical mechanical work

  • Mount, dismount, and balance light and heavy duty tires

  • Perform simple light duty repairs such as replacing wiper blades, jump starting, and headlight replacements

  • Assist qualified VMT’s performing Preventive Maintenance and repairs on medium/heavy duty trucks and mounted equipment

  • Clean garage floors, emptying trash, and maintaining general housekeeping inside and around garage area

  • Washing and cleaning of vehicles/equipment for maintenance. Shuttle vehicles and equipment

  • Perform garage compliance and safety inspections. Shuttle parts and equipment between garages and vendors

  • Other non-technical duties as assigned by supervision

Basic Qualifications

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent

  • Candidate must be enrolled in an Associate’s Degree of Automotive Science or accredited equivalent certification program

  • Candidate must have completed at least one full semester in the program

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher

  • Valid NC and SC Class C driver’s license

  • Ability to operate forklifts or be certified to do so within 90-120 days

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience cleaning and fueling vehicles/equipment

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

  • Experience as garage helper or other maintenance function

  • Ability to perform minor vehicle checks

  • Ability to complete and maintain basic records (written and computer entry)

Working Conditions

  • Onsite - Work will be performed at a company facility.
