South Jersey Industries Lead Damage Prevention Specialist in Green Lane Division, New Jersey

Basic Functions:

  • Develop, plan and monitor the company’s leak survey activity on the distribution and transmission pipeline system. Responsible for overseeing damage prevention program to ensure operational objectives concerning quality, technical specifications, reliability, and schedule are met. Ensure compliance with federal and state code regulations related to leak survey and damage prevention. Oversite of two contractor work forces.


  • High School/GED

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or Business Administration Preferred

Type of Experience Required:

  • Minimum of five years of relevant work experience related to engineering, construction, or distribution operations.

  • Without degree, minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience related to engineering, construction, or distribution operations.


  • Strong understanding of NJAC 14:2 and BPU regulations.

  • Must be able to effectively communicate and possess strong organizational and leadership skills.

  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills required.

  • Good written and verbal communications skills are required.

  • Technical field knowledge of gas distribution and/or transmission operating systems

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Microsoft Office Suite

Essential Functions:

  • Plan, direct, supervise and coordinate the outsourced and in-house leak survey activities for the Company’s transmission and distribution system.

  • Prepares and oversees the scheduling and adherence of compliance related activities for leakage surveys.

  • Monitor divisions for leak survey by conducting inspections of records to verify consistent and proper documentation. Conduct operational audits in all divisions to ensure compliance of regulations as well as company procedures. Advise divisional personnel on company programs and procedures.

  • Organize and lead NJ Board of Public Utilities inspections of the company’s leak survey records. Ensures divisional personnel and documentation is properly prepared in advance of all record inspections. Documents and communicates inspection results with divisional personnel and management.

  • Lead and integrate all studies, analyses and planning in support of continuous improvement of the Damage Prevention Program.

  • Supervises in-house Asset Protection Specialist personnel and outsourced locate contractor personnel.

  • Manage the collection of damages through accurate and timely field investigation reports and act as a first-person witness when necessary. Investigate all damages to gas facilities including any damages by contractors or third-party services. Analyze the root cause of investigated damages and communicate how future damages may be avoided.

  • Promote damage prevention activities and encourage open communication with field personnel. Respond to inquiries from all stakeholders including; state regulators, excavators and/or home owners on damage prevention topics.

  • Implement safe work practices and a proactive safety culture while ensuring safety for employees, the public, and the environment at all times. Ensure that improvements in systems, processes and procedures are identified and implemented. Evaluates new technology to improve damage prevention programs.

  • Requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
