The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

This position is the Distribution Capacity Planner for the Goldsboro, Clinton, and Kinston service area.

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to the following

  • Primarily responsible for five year loading studies and large customer additions to find the best solutions that meet standards for capacity, balance, voltage and power factor.

  • Involved in supporting reliability initiatives such as sectionalization protection studies and PowerUp Targeted Opportunities.

  • Serves as a consultant for solar and battery interconnections.

  • Heavily involved with scoping Grid Improvement programs such as Self-Optimizing Grid, Integrated Volt-Var Control, Fuse Replace, Hydraulic Recloser replacements, Urban Underground Automation, Long Duration Outages, etc.

  • Gets involved with local temporary switching for project work, to avoid outages and limit use of portable transformers. Interfaces with DPAC and Grid Management.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Note: This posting is for one position. Dependent on relevant experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

Engineer III

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

  • Four (4) years related work experience

Senior Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

  • Six (6) years related work experience

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer

  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles

  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds

  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Proficient in principles of project management

  • Experience in the utility industry

  • Knowledge of CYME or similar distribution system analysis tool

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.

  • Availability for storm response

  • Based out of the Goldsboro Office (alternative locations available)

  • Mainly office environment utilizing a laptop

  • 15 – 20 % travel, mostly local or day trips including routine visits to the field for detailed studies and troubleshooting.
