Urban Forestry Inspector

The City of Gainesville's Planning Division now has an opening for a Full-Time Urban Forestry Inspector. The position holder will be responsible for professional and technical work in urban forestry.

As an Urban Forestry Inspector, you will:

  • Review plans for site plan approval for compliance with City ordinances regarding tree protection and landscaping; determine appropriateness of tree species selected by contractors or general public based on site conditions and infrastructure; redline plans for appropriate changes.

  • Inspect tree barricades, irrigation, and landscaping installation.

  • Meet with contractors to assure plantings are compatible with infrastructure.

  • Make technical presentations to City Advisory Boards.

  • Inspect trees for which removal permits are sought to ensure replanting requirements are met.

  • Survey trees on public property to assess their structural durability and ensure public safety.

  • Other duties as assigned

To be considered for this position you must have:

  • Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with major course work in Urban Forestry, Horticulture, Botany, or related subject.

  • Two (2) years' experience in urban forestry or horticulture or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, ability, and skills.

  • Valid State of Florida Driver's License.

Note:

  • Must become certified as an Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture within one (1) year of being hired into this position; must maintain certification.

Job Description

NATURE OF WORK

This is responsible professional and technical work in urban forestry.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS

Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under general supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from higher classes by its limited supervisory duties and from lower classes by its technical skill and knowledge of urban forestry.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with major course work in Urban Forestry, Horticulture, Botany, or related subject. Two (2) years experience in urban forestry or horticulture or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, ability, and skills.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATES

Valid State of Florida Driver's License.

Must become certified as an Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture within one (1) year of being hired into this position; must maintain certification.

NOTES

Work requires sharing responsibility for 24-hours availability to respond to tree emergencies.

Work requires attending meetings outside regular business hours.

Work may require performance of tasks outdoors under varying climatic conditions.

Work may require performance of tasks at elevated levels.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Reviews plans for site plan approval for compliance with City ordinances regarding tree protection and landscaping; determines appropriateness of tree species selected by contractors or general public based on site conditions and infrastructure; redlines plans for appropriate changes.

Inspects tree barricades, irrigation, and landscaping installation. Meets with contractors to assure plantings are compatible with infrastructure.

NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

May supervise other staff.

May assist in grant preparation.

May assist in emergency storm situations.

Performs other related work as required.

SELECTION FACTORS

Thorough knowledge of proper tree pruning and removal standards as specified in American National Standards for Tree Care Operations.

Thorough knowledge of tree and shrub biology, classification, plant pests and diseases, and identification of various types of trees and plants and their cultivation.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Knowledge of personal computers and relevant software programs.

Ability to work effectively with co-workers and the general public.

Ability to prepare reports and presentation, and maintain records.

Ability to read and interpret plan specifications and blueprints accurately and to compare them to construction in progress.

Ability to enforce ordinances and other regulations with firmness, tact, and impartiality.
