Pike Corporation Director of Engineering and Services (Substation) in Fort Mill, South Carolina

SUMMARY: This position is responsible for leading the substation (physical) engineering team for Pike Engineering. The incumbent is responsible for meeting budget targets including profitability, employee utilization, costs and growth. The incumbent is also responsible for providing project and client management, and technical direction for substation engineering and design business operations and may be required to seal engineering drawings. The team is expected to deliver top quality, safe, and cost-effective engineering and design services to Pike’s customers. The incumbent is the single point of accountability for the client relationships, business development, proposal development, cost estimating, and successful planning, execution and closeout of projects. The incumbent has overall responsibility for managing and overseeing all aspects of projects including scope, schedule, cost, safety and quality as well as keeping company management informed of project status and issues. The incumbent should be able to work independently and be viewed by his industry peers as an expert in substation engineering and project management principles. The incumbent is also expected to maintain awareness of industry trends, which will become the basis for strategic planning, forecasting, and client development. Personnel responsibilities include carrying out such programs as training and development, performance appraisals, compensation, employee recruiting, employee engagement, succession planning and adherence to standards of conduct with the expectation of maintaining a best-in-class substation engineering team. ESSENTIALDUTIESAND RESPONSIBILITIES: Manage resources to attain target financial results by: 1. 1. Identifying growth opportunities within the relevant markets and securing/maintaining a backlog of work, including developing and writing proposals. 2. Setting competitive prices for the services offered that yield acceptable margins. 3. Managing resources and controlling costs to effectively deliver the services. 4. Maintaining efficient service delivery processes that ensure safe operations and quality work product. 5. Analyzing financial results on an ongoing basis, explaining variance from plan/budget and taking corrective action as required. 6. Managing contract negotiation, change order identification, submittal and approval, administration, and establishing and maintaining processes to carry out the contract including management of subcontractors. 7. Review of project financials reports to project accounting with adequate backup for management, internal and external accounting. 8. Review of financial controls to ensure project profitability and expected cash flow positions. Provide leadership to ensure the availability of a skilled, qualified, and motivated workforce by: 1. 1. Displaying effective leadership skills in motivating, rewarding, and assisting individuals through the use of innovative techniques and effective management systems. 2. Ensuring that individuals have the training, tools, personal equipment, work environment, and technical support to optimize their performance and achieve desired results. 3. Providing individuals with honest and constructive feedback, assistance in setting priorities, and opportunities for personal and professional development. 4. Creating an environment where team performance is more important than individual performance. 5. Coaching and mentoring of other professionals. Manage the portfolio of technical disciplines within the substation physical engineering & design area, including electrical, civil and structural, and ensure the technical capabilities of the department can meet changing market conditions. Ensure that all staffing and utilization goals are met. Coordinate resource activities with those in other engineering & design areas within the Company. Provide technical leadership to ensure that all specific engineering services are provided per applicable professional codes and standards by: 1. 1. Providing technical direction to project teams on complex multi-disciplined projects. 2. Developing and maintaining engineering standards, work practices, and systems. 3. Adhering to established QA/QC principles, policies and procedures, and helping maintain and update QA/QC policies and procedures. 4. Maintaining knowledge of the engineering and technical industry codes, standards, and best practices. 5. Developing and maintaining knowledge of the current and future enablers, systems, and applications available in the industry to ensure continuous improvement. Ensure that client relations are properly maintained, and Pike Engineering’s market reputation is enhanced by: 1. Managing of projects in accordance with Pike Policies and Procedures. 2. Managing of client and project stakeholder relationships, ensuring effective business relationships are in place and trusted by all. 3. Providing project reporting and status to the project team, management, and client 4. Ensuring accurate and timely invoices. 5. Improving the organization’s profitability by generating new prospects and developing new existing client relationships. 6. Leading the team in sourcing, managing and implementing new business opportunities and office functions. 7. Analyzing and understanding our customer’s businesses as well as pertinent data and trends in the target market. Ensure that accurate estimating and appropriate risk management is applied to all proposals and contract negotiations. Adhere to and help advance Pike Engineering’s corporate safety policies. Ensure administrative duties are carried out in accordance with company policy. Perform other duties as assigned by management.
