Job Specifications

The Technical Consultant will be responsible for all aspects of application support, application architecture design and administration. This includes support for basic system architectures, software installation and configuration, security, and performance tuning. The Technical Consultant will also be responsible for troubleshooting, capacity planning, patch management and backup recovery procedures.

The Technical Consultant will be expected to regularly meet with business representatives to verify requirements for designated systems.

The primary focus of this position will be to provide technical support for our Utility GIS Application systems and their supporting systems.

SALARY GRADE: $76,300.00 - $114,450.00 (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

  • Provide technical leadership in project meetings

  • Provide IT consulting services to other teams in IT and across the business

  • Provide thorough and well written technical reviews of business applications, cloud services and third-party applications

  • Provide detailed, professional quality architectural diagrams

  • Responsible in support and architectural design of multi-tiered applications

  • Responsible in integrating systems of various technologies.

  • Responsible in troubleshooting system issues including application, database, and network

  • Responsible for the installation and configuration of complex software systems following established IT procedures and change control standards

  • Responsible for post-installation verification, risk assessments and gap analysis

  • Responsible for setting strategy, direction, coordination, and planning for designated systems

  • Work closely with co-workers, application developers and end-users to resolve application and performance related issues

  • Ensure recoverability of designated systems

  • Ensure security and integrity of designated systems

  • Install, patch, and maintain designated systems in accordance with the IT patching policy

  • Ensure compliance with all corporate policies including but not limited to SOX and NERC/CIP

  • Monitor and optimize the performance of designated systems

  • Process work related requests in an accurate and timely manner

  • Work as part of the Technical Consulting team and provide 24x7x365 support when required


  • Provide various application server support as needed

  • Provide monthly status reports

  • Provide detailed, professional quality architectural diagrams

  • Assist with supervision and cross-training of your peers and co-workers

  • Ability to effectively document procedures for audit and control purposes

  • Willingly accept all other duties as assigned


  • Three (3) years of experience supporting complex multi-tiered applications required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.


  • Strong knowledge of Linux OS, architecture, and troubleshooting techniques is required

  • Strong knowledge of Windows OS, architecture, and troubleshooting techniques is required

  • Strong knowledge of multi-tiered applications is required

  • Knowledge of database technologies and advanced troubleshooting techniques preferred

  • Knowledge of networking technologies and advanced troubleshooting techniques preferred

  • Knowledge of Virtualization Technologies (VMWare, HyperV)

  • Knowledge of scripting languages (PowerShell, Perl, Python etc.)

  • Knowledge of programming languages (Java, .NET etc.)

  • Understand the principles, theories and practices of effective project management

  • Knowledge of the Utility Industry is preferred

  • Self-motivated

  • Ability to complete tasks without supervision

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include: Light work. The employee is continuously required to stand and walk. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

Work environment: Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level. Must be willing to travel occasionally (less than 10 days per year) by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities.
