Responsible for overall engineering supervision, technical direction, adherence to standards and procedures along with the development of technical staff within the Transmission Engineering Design Group. Manages all aspects of staff’s assigned scope of responsibility, employee and public safety and the completion of organization objectives. Responsible for providing overall direction and implementation of various continuous improvement tools and methodology that supports the gas handling system needs and creates value. Leads, coordinates and reviews the work of a staff of engineers and/or technicians and may be assisted on projects by others. Develops and updates resource plan to reflect personnel needs, schedules and assigns work. Must be able to make sound engineering decisions under time constraints.
Ensures engineering design practices are in compliance with applicable regulations, codes & standards.
Leads and ensures implementation of continuous improvement initiatives.
Establishes required internal standards and practices for design engineering.
Maintains awareness of industry performance issues through research, self-assessment and benchmarking; incorporates ‘lessons learned’ and information obtained through involvement in industry groups, forums, etc. to ensure up-to-date practices within the incumbent’s area of responsibility.
Manages assigned program areas including: planning, organizing, supervision, budgeting, staffing, implementing strategies and monitoring results.
Directs activities of design engineers supporting field construction projects.
Performs employee appraisals and assists in developing employees for assignments requiring increased knowledge and/or responsibility.
Provides consultation advice and problem solving analysis to manager and senior management, and other individuals (internal and external) and business units, focusing on equipment reliability and plant safety of the gas transmission system.
Provides leadership to others in the form of work direction, monitoring and training.
Supervises contract support activities, including the preparation of requests for quote bid evaluation; makes recommendations to management based on the analysis of engineering data.
Analyzes and recommends solutions to job related problems.
Conducts advanced technical studies or operating studies, analyzing and resolving gas handling system problems.
Makes clear and precise presentations to all levels of management.
Required: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, and 7-plus years of progressively responsible experience as an Engineer in gas handling equipment particularly related to gas compression, processing and regulation.
Preferred: Yellow Belt Certification
Preferred: 2 year of senior or lead work experience
Preferred: Professional Engineer registration
Ability to interpret drawings and schematics and other design documents.
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the Corporation’s service area.
Working knowledge of natural gas handling systems, including transmission, distribution, storage, processing, controls, measurement, environmental, regulatory compliance, gas analysis and materials testing and analysis.
Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards including Michigan Gas Safety Standards.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written with people at all levels both within and outside the company.
Analytical & problem-solving skills consistent with the ability to identify key issues from a broad range of alternatives, and recommend optimal solutions for various situations
Competent in “multi-tasking” (i.e. the ability to prioritize & manage multiple tasks, issues or projects that may include high-visibility initiatives and require innovation, teamwork & planning).
Initiates new ideas and approaches; challenges orthodox practices & approaches with reasonably sound alternatives.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications sufficient to apply them with minimal instruction or guidance.
