Job Summary

Location: Detroit, Michigan

Responsibilities include helping lawyers prepare for hearings, trials, corporate meetings, and due diligence for acquisitions, and designing and implementing programs, policies, and practices to ensure that all business units are in compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements. the employee exercises independent discretion and judgment within established policies, procedures, and practices. Results are reviewed through the achievement of set goals and adherence to these policies, procedures, and practices.

Key Accountabilities

• Receives and dockets complaints and discovery requests. Reviews the same and develops a schedule for response; identifies needed resources and makes contacts as appropriate to gather data.

• Schedules and interviews clients to develop factual background; summarizes information gathered and confers with the attorney to formulate a case by case strategy.

• Drafts interrogatories, requests for production, requests for admissions, deposition questions, motions, and other legal memoranda or correspondence as directed.

• Schedules and prepares deponents and/or witnesses for testimony prior to a deposition and/or trial.

• Attends and takes notes during either of these forums; prepares and indexes information for use in case development. Digests deposition transcripts to identify and organize related information.

• Assists attorneys and clients with implementation of litigation holds. Involves regular consultation with attorneys, clients and clients' IT personnel to help ensure litigation holds are being implemented and followed.

• Organizes case materials for trial. Prepare exhibits/exhibit books, trial notebooks, and other documents as required. Monitors and observes proceedings, acts as liaison between attorney and witnesses to coordinate appearances.

• Locates and researches points of law and/or other reference material related to ongoing cases and issues; extracts relevant information and summarizes findings.

• Summarizes customer account information and negotiates bankruptcy settlements.

• Gathers and reviews facts re: right of way and real estate disputes and bankruptcy matters.

• Assists with transaction closings (by preparing, organizing and collating transaction documents) and SEC filings (by preparing, formatting and delivering documents to be filed).

• Prepares first drafts of various standard agreements (NDAs, ISDAs, EEIs, etc.); provides drafts to, and accepts comments, from clients and counterparties for such agreements.

• Assists with and initiates continuous improvement activities.

• Assists with managing delivery of work to, and status reports from outside counsel.

• May require FERC gas training.

• Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with 5 years of work experience as a full-time paralegal or legal assistant in a public, private, or corporate setting.

Other Qualifications


• Prior experience with E-Discovery, electronic document preservation and collection systems

• Competent with prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, issues or projects that may include high-visibility initiatives and require innovation, teamwork, and planning.

• Must be able to identify and define problems; gather, structure, and format related data; develop strategies and/or solutions; and implement action plans with minimum supervision of an attorney and/or management.

• Must be able to function as a member of a collaborative and productive team; must be able to work with all people at all levels, both within and outside the company.

• Must have a demonstrated proficiency in the use of desktop computer equipment and various corporate software programs PathwayNet, Lotus/Notes, etc. with the ability to achieve high-level proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software.

• Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

• Must have a valid driver's license and meet Company driving standards.
