Summary: The Buyer supports the Strategic Sourcing Specialists of raw materials, purchasing materials and services necessary to meet production schedules and maintenance, repair and operational goods and services per ERP requirements, with a strong focus on ERP system Purchase Order changes and expedites. The Buyer would support the raw material Strategic Sourcing Specialists as they manage and strategize assigned categories of raw materials, fabricated parts and other goods and services to include Supplier Relations, Contract Negotiation, Buy Consolidation, Management of Cost Savings Initiatives, and Continuous Quality Improvement. It would be an expectation that the buyer learns contract negotiation, inventory reduction to JIT, supplier relationships and consolidation of buy to ensure best price. A further developed coordinator would also learn to analyze raw material market conditions as they relate to the Company, keeping abreast of company performance to proactively strategize pricing/sourcing of materials/scrap/product in accordance to key company goals and needs.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists with the researching and subsequent qualification of new Supplier sources for the purpose of obtaining improved pricing, delivery, quality, and service for BTD raw material/services.

  • Reviews daily inventory levels and constantly works to reduce on hand and shorten lead time with suppliers.

  • Learns about relevant market trends and conditions to ensure awareness of potential changes in the market place that may affect price, availability, or quality of product purchased.

  • Purchases assigned items from qualified sources to include the interpretation and negotiation of favorable terms and conditions. Consolidates buy where it makes sense and most cost effective for BTD, under supervision of strategic sourcing specialists.

  • Maintains purchase order, quotation, and quality records in accordance with departmental policies.

  • From direction of strategic sourcing specialists, obtains and prepares quotations, evaluates same and selects Suppliers providing the best position for the Company.

  • Prepares the risk analysis of consolidating buy with one supplier versus multiple, and vice-versa, and reports information to Strategic Sourcing Specialists to make best decision for Company.

  • Reviews and interprets requests for purchases to include requirements generated via ERP/MRP Manufacturing system.

  • Resolves all exceptions taken to issued/negotiated purchase orders.

  • Per purchasing team, coordinates supplier visits on and offsite; maintains open and honest business relationships with Suppliers and subcontractors. Uses suppliers as a resource for market information and knowledge, bringing this information back to BTD

  • Participates in the development and implementation of systems which measure, track, and analyze supplier and material effectiveness, including Supplier delivery performance, price and product quality.

  • Develops Supplier Performance Reports and conducts Supplier Performance Reviews semi-annually.

  • Learns to conduct on-site Supplier surveys and quality audits to ensure Supplier compliance with ISO Requirements and meets BTD Manufacturing, Inc. expectations.

  • Assists in issuing Supplier Corrective Action Reports/Nonconformance Debit Memos to Suppliers and follows up on corrective action and verification as required by departmental process.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Graduation from high school plus two years of related technical training or three years of related on-the-job training, a four year degree is desired but not required.

Experience and Skills Required: At least three years of recent related technical experience or hold a four year degree, which includes the following skills and abilities:

  • Working knowledge of MRP/ERP systems, supply chain management, contract administration, negotiation and inventory control.

  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills.

  • Working knowledge of general accounting principles, production control, quality control and traffic management.

  • General knowledge of product costing, internal accounting controls, and financial analysis of revenues and expenditures.

  • Knowledge of engineering and manufacturing as they relate to the purchasing function to include basic blueprint reading.

  • Ability to organize, direct and coordinate manufacturing purchasing programs.

  • Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with Suppliers, Internal customers, and co-workers and to present ideas effectively, orally and in writing.

  • Ability to be coached by Strategic Sourcing Specialists, developing the skills to eventually purchase at the Strategic Sourcing Specialists level.

  • Ability to operate general office equipment including related purchasing applications on a microcomputer.
