MidAmerican Energy Company Supervisor, Electric Standards in Davenport, Iowa

Supervises and provides engineering services for the development and/or maintenance of transmission construction standards, distribution construction standards, distribution design standards, planning standards, electric service manual and material specifications. Reviews, directs and coordinates work activities for the electric standards group and the various committees supported by electric standards. Provides leadership, manages resources and supports decisions made from the electric distribution construction standards committee. Performs construction audits throughout the service territory for adherence to standards and presents findings to field employees, supervisors and managers, and identifies improvement opportunities. Investigates material failures, evaluates materials and manufacturing facilities, and performs technical bid evaluations.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Function)

Direct, coordinate and review the work activities and work product of the materials and drafting technicians. Perform supervision duties including managing, developing, motivating, monitoring and evaluating the performance of the individuals reporting to him/her. (15%)

Manage the development, additions and revisions to the electric material standards as well as the electric distribution construction standards. Evaluate product specifications, perform manufacturing inspections and approvals, develop material specifications and coordinate revisions with the supply chain and stores groups. Oral and written reports of results are prepared. Assist supply chain with the blanket bid process and perform technical bid evaluations. Review and approve purchase requests for limited and/or non-standard materials. (15%)

Lead the electric distribution construction standards committee, develop the agenda, provide technical subject matter expertise, develop material presentations and evaluations, provide recommendations and lead committee discussions for material and construction standards related topics. (15%)

Conduct electric construction standards field inspections for adherence to standards across the territory and compose audit reports for electric service areas. Present findings to field employees, supervisors, and managers. Identify items to improve construction and engineering compliance. (15%)

Communicate electric material and construction standards information/education throughout the company. Interpret National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) requirements using advanced knowledge of the NESC, and apply to required construction standards. The NESC sets the ground rules for practical safeguarding of persons during the installation, operation, or maintenance of electric supply and communication lines and associated equipment. (10%)

Develop project plans and education, provide direction and coordinate project training associated with electric standards. (10%)

Investigate electric material failures and coordinate technical evaluations as required. Work with material manufacturers on corrective actions and/or recommend enhancements to material designs. (5%)

Participate in committees involved with electric standards such as Midwest Electrical Distribution Exchange, Engineering Roundtable Committee, Electric Service Manual Committee, Design Standards Committee, Transformer Committee, and the Avian Power Line Interaction Committee. (5%)

Perform supervisory activities, including employee safety, selection and development of employees, employee counseling and motivation and salary administration. Prepare and administer department budgeting and report the work performed within the department. (5%)

Support planning, design and service standards. (5%)

Demonstration of knowledge and understanding of human performance improvement techniques.

Evaluate present practices and implement processes, concepts, training and tools to prevent, detect and correct human errors that may adversely impact the safe, reliable operation of the electric transmission and distribution system.

Bachelor's degree in appropriate engineering discipline from an accredited institution or equivalent work experience. (Typically six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.)

Eight years' experience in related engineering applications or other related industry experience, including one year in a senior technical/leadership role.
