MidAmerican Energy Company Engineer I, II, Senior, Senior Engineer II, Principal-System Protection in Davenport, Iowa

This is a multi-level posting. Candidates may be considered for any of the posted levels, depending on their level of experience and depth of expertise. Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Function) Provides extensive, diversified and highly technical engineering services and directs the work of others for the design, construction and operation of system protection devices and equipment for MidAmerican Energy Company's electric supply and delivery system. Determines protective relay and control schemes to be applied at electric substations and generation facilities. Works with substation engineering to develop capital budget estimates and authorization for expenditures. Performs complex power system over-current coordination studies, power fault analyses and investigations of electric system operations. Determines settings for electromechanical, solid state and microprocessor based relays and associated communications devices. Recommends settings for substation feeder reclosers and assists distribution engineering with coordination studies and line recloser applications and settings. Develops design standards and recommend system protection practices. Conducts technically advanced engineering studies and complex investigations; prepares oral and written reports of results and recommendations. Provides technically advanced system protection support to other departments. Responsibilities may include developing presentations for senior management and professional/industry groups, authoring technical papers for publication by professional/industry organizations, chairing company committees/task groups and participating in industry standards committees. Keeps informed of industry issues/technical trends and recommends and implements changes to benefit MidAmerican Energy Company. Provides advanced technical input to assist in project planning. Typical Duties Provide engineering services for the planning, design and construction of project additions to MidAmerican Energy Company's energy delivery system; focus may include planning and budgeting gas and electric systems, conducting system expansion studies and economic evaluation studies, separately and in conjunction with other utilities, designing new facilities, preparing specifications, drawings and contracts, power system protection design and system disturbance analysis. (40%) Provide technical project management for all phases of a project including scheduling, design, estimates, engineering specifications, drawings, materials procurement, construction contracts, cost tracking and project cost projections. (25%) Conduct advanced engineering studies and complex investigations; prepare oral and written reports of results and recommendations. (15%) Provide advanced engineering assistance to other departments; facilitate internal training classes for engineers and technicians; responsibilities may include developing presentations for senior management and professional/industry groups, authoring technical papers for publication by professional/industry organizations, chairing company committees/task groups and participating in industry standards committees and perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned. (15%) Keep informed of industry issues/technical trends and recommend and implement changes to benefit MidAmerican's business. (5%) Provide technical leadership to staff. Demonstration of knowledge and understanding of human performance improvement techniques. Evaluate present practices and implement processes, concepts, training and tools to prevent,detect and correct human errors that may adversely impact the safe, reliable operation of the electric transmission and distribution system. Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution. Engineering degree from an accredited college/university and 1-3 years’ experience is required for the engineer II level. Engineering degree from an accredited college/university and 5 years industry experience is required for the senior engineer level. PE license preferred. Engineering degree from an accredited college/university and 8 years industry experience is required for the senior engineer II level. Requires PE. If no PE license, must have 10 years as a practicing engineer. Engineering degree from an accredited college/university and 12 years industry experience as a practicing engineer, including experience performing highly technical work of specialized nature is required for the principal engineer level. Requires PE. If no PE license, must have 15 years as a practicing engineer. Effective verbal and written communication skills, including presentation skills.
