Under the direct guidance and support of the Regional Safety Manager and as a member of the Division Safety Department, the Safety Specialist(s) are responsible for:
Supporting VPs, Superintendents, GFs, Foreman and workers in achieving all HSE objectives and in the implementation and improvement of Division H&S policies and procedures.
Evaluating the need for and develop site-specific policies or procedures.
Facilitating and/or participating in project or shutdown/outage/storm safety planning meetings and develop or review the safety plan(s).
Performing observations of each assigned crew once a month and supporting Operations in the closing of observations corrective actions in accordance with Division Safety requirements.
Providing technical and regulatory support as needed, including participation in regulatory visits or inspections.
Managing the site’s Substance Abuse and Fit-for-Duty programs.
Collecting, maintaining, and reporting information on the site H&S performance and program activities.
Ensuring or coordinating immediate response/reporting of all near misses, incidents, and emergencies.
Report all serious injuries immediately to Workers’ Compensation and ensure the use of Division case management and reporting procedure and forms.
Leading the investigation of incidents in accordance with Division policies and procedures.
Documenting and tracking corrective actions and findings, supporting their closure.
Leading/Coaching in the recognition/reward of employees’ safe performance, the behavioral safety observation program, safety awards and celebrations.
Ensuring that all Division employees complete all training required by OSHA, the customer and The Division Companies, and ensure proper documentation.
Coordinating with Customer Representatives to ensure that Safety Division meets or exceeds all client HSE expectations.
Coordinating with Division Safety and Human Resources to hire, train, direct, and coach one or more HSE technicians, if applicable.
Maintaining and improving HSE knowledge, skills, and abilities. Network with peers.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of OSHA standards for construction and general industry, as well as utility industry and associations’ standards, and best practices (required).
Ability to observe field conditions, operations, and tasks and recognize hazards, while applying the appropriate best practices to recommend HSE improvements or implement requirements.
Ability to use and interpret the readings of a variety of safety and health instruments and equipment.
Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing at all levels of the organization and present to groups (required).
Skilled in techniques of supervision and coaching.
Ability to deliver under pressure in a fast-paced environment (required).
Ability to work in a self-directed fashion (required).
Ability to work well as a team-member in a diverse environment (required).
Ability to use common office equipment (required).
Knowledge of Windows operating system and file and folder structure (required).
Ability to use Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat software (required)
Ability to read and understand various types of tables and graphical information (required)
Position experience and/or educational requirements
- 2-4 years as a Lineman, Safety Coordinator, Safety Technician in utility processes. REQUIRED
Physical requirements of the position and the work environment
Able to lift 40 lb. file boxes from the floor and carry them up to 50 ft.
Able to open and close file cabinets.
Able to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
Ability to climb stairs and fixed ladders.
Ability to work for short periods in temperature extremes.
Ability to work in noisy, dusty environments, or in environments where toxic substances are present, while wearing personal protective equipment.
Ability to wear fire resistant clothing and/or chemical protective clothing during a work shift.
Ability to work overtime and/or night shifts.
Overnight travel required.
