Senior level professional position that relies upon natural gas utility knowledge and experience, along with advanced training knowledge and experience, to create, develop, improve and deliver high-quality technical training to natural gas utility employees through distance-learning, instructor-led and hands-on training methods. Functions as a leader within the Technical Training Department. Represents the Technical Training and Operator Qualification department on internal committees and Industry events. Guides important projects to their successful completion. Mentors Trainer & Operator Qualification Evaluators. May be delegated supervisory responsibilities and authority, when needed. Proctors tests and functions as an Operator Qualification Evaluator, conducting hands-on performance evaluations in accordance with the Company’s Operator Qualification Plan and 49 CFR, Part 192, Subpart N. Performs tasks and assignments that demonstrate advanced proficiency in all aspects technical training and operator qualification knowledge, skills and abilities. Partners with peers, vendors, industry associations and both internal and external subject matter experts to identify and improve training content to enhance employee task mastery. May work independently or as a member of a team of peer training professionals.

SALARY RANGE: $74,800 - $112,200 (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

  • Conduct all job duties with Safety as the number one priority, by participating in and promoting a culture of safety and compliance with the Company’s policies and procedures.

  • Perform natural gas utility operations classroom and hands-on technical training.

  • Mentors other Technical Training Team Members.

  • Manages departmental projects.

  • Performs the functions of a supervisor, when needed.

  • Proctor testing.

  • Function as an Operator Qualification Evaluator by assessing the knowledge, skills and abilities of natural gas utility operations employees.

  • Ensure contractors performing covered tasks for the Company are properly qualified and are performing covered tasks according to Company procedures and regulatory requirements.

  • Maintain open communication with Operations personnel and Technical Training and Operator Qualification department personnel, including direct Supervisor.

  • Interpret regulations and identify their applicability to Company business and operational policies and procedures.

  • Review, improve and/or develop classroom and hands-on technical training content/materials.

  • Provide technical support to managers, supervisors and field personnel.

  • Assists, supports and advises peers and Trainer & Operator Qualification Evaluators.

  • Maintain regional technical training schedules, facilities and equipment.

  • Setup and takedown training props, classrooms, events and exercises.

  • Input training records into Learning Management System.


  • Coordinate and facilitate special projects.

  • Assist in the investigation of incidents and accidents.

  • Participate in community relations-based activities.

  • Review new equipment/technology for compatibility with Company policy and procedures.

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders (internal employees, State and Federal regulators, contractors, vendors, customers, the general public and, other utility companies).

  • Internal employee working relationships include coordination with vice presidents, directors, managers, supervisors and front-line employees.

  • Membership and participation in industry associations.


  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience as a trainer, OQ evaluator, or working in natural gas utility operations is required.

  • Experience performing instructor-led and hands-on training is required.

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.


  • Ability to learn natural gas utility operation, maintenance and construction practices.

  • Ability to learn natural gas utility emergency procedures, and State and Federal codes/regulations.

  • Advanced knowledge of adult learning techniques.

  • Ability to learn 49 CFR, Part 192, Subpart N, Operator Qualification (OQ) requirements.

  • Advanced knowledge of Learning Management Systems (LMS).

  • Ability to learn natural gas utility equipment such as; leak detection devices, line locators, stopping and tapping equipment, odorometers, and odorizers.

  • Leadership skills.

  • Interpersonal skills.

  • Classroom presentation, facilitation, and training skills.

  • Advanced computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel, etc.

  • Ability to demonstrate standard natural gas utility operation equipment such as; leak detection devices, line locators, stopping and tapping equipment, odorometers, and odorizers.

  • Ability to immediately obtain Operator Qualification Evaluator certification.

Employee must be able to operate routine office equipment including computers and similar equipment. Must be able to routinely perform this work for an average of 6-8 hours per day and occasional extended hours as necessary. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance.

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include: Light work. The employee is continuously required to stand and walk. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

Work environment: Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level, and occasionally outdoors in sometimes inclement weather. Worker may be subject to hazards including variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working in places of height, or close quarters. Must be capable of up to 50% travel (e.g. 2 weeks or 10 days/month) by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities. Travel will be necessary to conduct the duties of this job, and the employee must have the ability to drive and have proper licensing.
