The position will have primary responsibility for managing the technology development and scouting disciplines for the AEP Enterprise Innovation and Technology team. You will enable possibilities by identifying opportunities to satisfy customer demands using the technologies of today while looking for strategic opportunities to leap ahead of current day problems with first of a kind offerings using the technologies of tomorrow. This position will lead the technology scouting effort and facilitate integration of technologies and strategic technology partners into our business in a manner that accelerates advancement in our core business functions and achieves strategic objectives. This manager will work closely with the innovation process manager and team members in adjacent groups to ensure insights are validated and new products and services that solve customer problems are created as a result.

This position will report to the Director of Enterprise Innovation & Technology and will lead technology and business model scouting for the enterprise. This position will require agile development and execution of strategies that produce results and establish compelling evidence that demonstrates value of the insights. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to provide a high degree of customer service and build strong internal and external relationships to deliver insights, partnerships, products, services, and business models our customers and company will value.

The successful candidate will work closely with senior stakeholders in each of the operating companies and business units to establish our enterprise technology scouting practice to include the implementation of the technology tracking tool. This position will be responsible for leading a team of technology subject matter experts from across the company to capture emerging insights from (but not limited to) customers, universities, suppliers, starting companies, industry peers, entrepreneurs and from within AEP. This role will have responsibilities for technical and business model innovation as they relate to creating new opportunities for AEP. These insights will be used to identify technology for our projects/products, strategic partners, and investment opportunities. This role will establish attributes, metrics and an evaluation methodology that signal a high potential technology or partner. Work with stakeholders within and external to AEP to select high potential opportunities and facilitate the initial introduction, demonstration, incorporation and partnership terms for high potential partners.

This position will require some understanding of the current value streams of an energy utility including generation, transmission, distribution and its support organizations. It will also require some knowledge of the regulatory process, how a regulated utility receives recovery for its investments and the deregulated business.

  1. Build and manage our enterprise innovation technology insights portfolio. Responsible for building and integrating our technology scouting and tracking discipline including change management, integration of internal and external stakeholders, identifying strategic opportunities for innovation, and pairing technologies with customer insights. Responsible for identifying strategic technology opportunities to create new value for the company. Responsible for prioritizing insights and assisting with the innovation process.

  2. Manage execution and improvement of workflows within the innovation insight framework. Directly and indirectly manage teams of intrapreneurs, technology experts, and external resources to continuously mature the innovation insight portfolio and its related process.

  3. Assist business units in strategic and new product/ service initiatives. Assist business units in strategic and new product/ service initiatives. Support interdepartmental relationships including operating company and primary business segment leadership, to provide methodology expertise, facilitate innovation engagements across the corporation and support business unit leaders in “raising the bar” of their core business aspirations. Work with business unit leaders to validate insights, products and services with our customers. Lead engagements for employees and external stakeholders that demonstrate the capabilities of technologies that will be used in the energy industry.

  4. Create and manage system to measure innovation insight portfolio. Use innovation appropriate key performance indicator (KPI) to mature the portfolio and bring value to the customer and company. Establish relevant KPIs that will signal success/failure. Manage insight process in a way that incentivizes and promotes learning, pivoting based on customer input and quickly terminating projects that aren’t efficiently producing value (learning and adoption).

  5. Promote an enterprise culture of innovation. Inspire, lead, and influence business unit leaders, cross-functional teams, internal stakeholders and customers to build and maintain the organization's capability to innovate. Create and promote an Intrapreneurial spirit and mindset among all AEP employees.

  6. Execute innovation & technology best practices. Benchmarking, scouting and standardizing market research methods for novel ideas and insights; strategic innovation, promoting open innovation and introducing group tools and processes that encourage creative thinking and problem-solving.

  7. Manage resources. Resource allocation processes (portfolio, stage-gate, capex, budgeting) to take ideas from concept to reality.

  8. Ensure target zero in safety, health & environmental. Lead the work group and ensure that all innovation and technology applicable policies, procedures, and regulations are followed. Additionally, ensure that all activities are accomplished according to AEP written policy and procedure.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's Degree; Graduate degree preferred.

Experience: Eight (8) years of relevant experience in one or a mixture of energy, technology, market strategy, entrepreneurship and/or business consulting. Experience with leading change and continuous improvement management.

Qua lifications: Self-starter willing to be a hands-on manager of a cross-functional team.

Demonstrated ability to inspire & engage employees and external stakeholders at all levels.

Ability to anticipate consumer needs coupled with execution skills.

Comfort with ambiguity and making progress without always having next steps clearly defined.

Required Travel : Up to 20%.

Requirements- Other : knowledge, skills, abilities and qualifications:

  • Experience with technology scouting, establishing strategic relationships, and integrating technologies into the energy utility domains.

  • Demonstrated technical savviness across multiple domains

  • Prior experience with technology and business model innovation with a corporation or start-up.

  • Prior experience leading Lean/Agile teams.

  • Self-starter willing to be a hands-on member/manager of a cross-functional team.
