Southern Nuclear, headquartered in Birmingham, AL, operates Southern Company's six nuclear reactors at three locations in Georgia and Alabama: two reactors at Plant Vogtle, near Waynesboro, GA; two reactors at Plant Hatch, near Baxley, GA; and two reactors at Plant Farley, near Dothan, AL. In addition, construction of two new reactors is underway at our Plant Vogtle location. Job Summary and Responsibilities:

A Control Technician at Plant Farley 1 & 2 will be responsible:

  • Performing relay calibrations to ensure compliance with protective and generation associated relay regulations

  • Performing routine maintenance on plant measurement, control and monitoring equipment to include the Westinghouse Ovation system

  • Performing surveillance and calibration on safety related relays

  • Managing the calibration lab and coordinating with offsite companies to ensure M&TE meet calibration standards

  • Monitoring the cyber security program for maintenance activities

  • This position may require emergency response organization participation

Education Requirements:

  • 2 Year Associate Degree in Electronics, Electronic Technology, Instrumentation or equivalent military training

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Two years of working experience in instrumentation and control, required

  • Nuclear power plant experience strongly preferred

  • Experience with Maximo for work order processing and condition reporting strongly preferred

  • Job knowledge in troubleshooting and calibration of complex relays and computer control systems required

  • Knowledge of PC's and basic computer skills (MS Excel, MS Office, MS Access)

  • Familiarity with OVATION control systems strongly preferred

  • Instrumentation knowledge in a power plant environment strongly preferred

  • Ability to interpret logic diagrams, electronic and electric schematics required

  • Ability to research, interpret and follow complex procedures required

  • Use electronic test equipment such as meters, digital recorders, oscilloscope, etc.

  • Industry certification as a basic Protective Relay Maintenance Technician or equivalent and work experience in the following: Maintaining, calibrating, functionally testing, troubleshooting and repairing electromagnetic induction protective relays, specifically:

  • Overcurrent relays

  • Over/undervoltage relays

  • Buss/differential relays

  • Transformer percentage differential with harmonic restraint relays

  • Industry certification as a Generation Protective Relay Maintenance Technician or equivalent and wok experience in the following: Maintaining, calibrating, functionally testing, troubleshooting and repairing generation protective relays, specifically:

  • Overcurrent relays

  • Negative sequence relays

  • Loss of field relays

  • Reverse power relays

  • Differential relays

  • Familiarity with the Double protective relay test system

  • The successful candidate must meet background screening and fitness for duty requirements.

  • The successful candidate must meet the physical requirements of the position.

  • Ensure personal safety standards are understood

  • This position requires you to serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization and live within one hour of Plant Farley's Emergency Operations Facility.
