AES Transmission Engineer in Colorado

AES Clean Energy is recruiting for the position of Transmission Associate within the Wind Development team. The position reports to the Senior Manager of Transmission Business Development, and will be based out of the Louisville, CO office. The role will include operating as an integrated member of the Wind Development team to advise on transmission and generator interconnection aspects across the AES Clean Energy wind portfolio. The position involves coordination with wind developers, project engineering and execution teams, and external parties including consultants, Transmission Owners, and ISOs/RTOs. The successful candidate will have the skills to balance multiple projects simultaneously and support business development efforts in a fast-paced, constantly evolving environment.

This role requires a technical background but sits in the Development team, so will need to balance technical savvy with the ability to assimilate into the business development side of renewable energy working on a team with diverse abilities. Preferably candidates will have at least a couple years' experience ideally with an electric utility or renewable energy developer, specifically experience with transmission, generator interconnection, energy markets and regulations, etc. Experience with power flow modeling software and utility transmission planning would be extremely valuable.

This position is expected to come into the Louisville, Colorado office (as needed) and work from home the rest of the time. The ideal candidate will be able to commute to Louisville, Colorado within a reasonable amount of time. Relocation assistance is available to relocate to Colorado.

Some travel is expected (10%).

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performing transmission system analysis to guide prospecting efforts for greenfield projects.

  • Performing and/or running consultant workflows to complete power flow analyses, injection studies, and replicating key market and regional deliverability studies.

  • Actively tracking and participating in regional transmission planning processes, and advocacy for AES Clean Energy interests in stakeholder forums.

  • Performing transmission due diligence for acquired projects.

  • Preparing and submitting interconnection applications for new projects.

  • Handling projects through the interconnection process, including working with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Obtaining, updating, and maintaining regional power flow base cases with changes in resource mix and transmission topology based on ISO/RTO regional plans.

  • Preparing network upgrade cost allocation estimates for proposed projects, based upon applicable tariff.

  • Verifying and challenging study results; performing multiple scenario sensitivity analyses based on future queue projections and retirements.

  • Understanding and gaining proficiency in ISO/RTO and Transmission Owner tariffs, business practices, interconnection standards, study practices, cost allocation methodologies, transmission planning standards, and transmission system performance evaluation criteria; possessing an understanding of regional transmission plans and operational practices.

Desired Skills and Expertise:

  • Proficiency in power flow software (PowerWorld, PSS/E).

  • Familiarity with ISO/RTO and Transmission Owner tariffs, planning processes, and generator interconnection processes.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle and prioritize several projects simultaneously to meet project schedules.

  • Ability to communicate efficiently in verbal and written correspondence.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related field.

  • 3-5 years of working experience in renewable energy development or transmission planning with an emphasis on generator interconnection.

The expected salary for this position, at commencement of employment, is between $90.000 and $110.500/Annual; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements such as annual bonus, in addition to a full range of medical, dental, vision, life, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if a candidate receives an offer of employment.
