Water Treatment Engineer

*Utilities is advertising this position at multiple levels, either an Engineer III or an Engineer IV. The successful candidate will be offered a position and corresponding salary commensurate with experience.

The Colorado Springs Utilities (Utilities) Water Planning and Design team is looking for a Water Treatment Engineer to support long term planning, capital project delivery (over $150M currently planned), and operational performance management of Utilities Water Treatment infrastructure that includes six water treatment plants with a combined maximum daily capacity of over 250 MGD.

Additionally, we own and operate six water treatment plants of various capacities utilizing primarily surface water from surrounding watersheds and trans-mountain sources. These water sources are distributed through a complex water distribution system consisting of 5 major pressure zones, 30 pumping stations, 37 finished water storage tanks, and over 2100 miles of transmission and distribution pipelines.

In this role, you will use your water treatment process technical skills in a collaborative environment to support Utilities asset lifecycle approach to planning, delivering, and managing the performance of our water treatment infrastructure.

Key areas of focus:

  • Water Treatment Process Design:

  • You will be the primary Water Treatment Process Subject Matter Expert for the organization. The position requires knowledge and expertise in state of the practice and state of the art treatment processes for municipal supply. You will have a working knowledge of plant hydraulics, chemical, physical, and biological treatment processes, process instrumentation and controls, and process optimization. The position requires the use of treatment process modeling, hydraulic modeling, and analytical software and an understanding of water treatment principles to develop planning, design, technical and optimization recommendations for treatment system improvements.

  • Infrastructure Planning and Design:

  • You will be expected to have the knowledge and skills necessary to support and lead projects of moderate to high complexity in the area of water treatment plant systems, that are interdependent with electrical, instrumentation and controls for treatment plants; raw water collection and transmission systems; pump and pipeline systems; potable and non-potable water distribution and storage systems. Opportunities also exist to work with and support other departments in the areas of water resource supply, water system operations, water standards, and wastewater.

  • Engineering Services During Construction:

  • You will also support construction projects through shop drawing and submittal reviews, field inspections, control strategy development/implementation, and commissioning and start-up planning and implementation activities.

Who you are: You will bring your Bachelor’s degree in engineering and your Professional Engineers license along with 4 or more years of water treatment process knowledge. You must be detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to work as part of a diverse team! If you are organized, able to develop new approaches to solve problems and balance multiple priorities we want you! Individuals who exhibit effective communication skills, a professional demeanor, and flexibility will excel in this position. Candidates should be proficient in planning and designing water treatment facilities.
