Water Corrosion Engineer

This is an at-will, supplemental full-time position hired to staff a project for a limited or defined period typically not to exceed twenty-four (24) months.

Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking a Staff Engineer eager to apply his or her engineering and scientific knowledge of water system condition assessment, cathodic protection and design and installation practices. You will analyze condition assessment data to determine replacement and renewal strategies and design replacement and renewal systems for the Colorado Springs Utilities' Water Services Division (WSD) Water Main Replacement and Renewal Program.

Colorado Springs Utilities has over 1200 miles of finished water transmission and distribution mains ranging in size from 4 to 60 inches constructed mainly of steel, cast iron, ductile iron, PVC, and HDPE. Colorado Springs Utilities Water Main Replacement and Renewal Program objective is to identify, prioritize, design and construct replacement and renewal of these water mains based on the condition and criticality of the water pipeline to minimize total failure.

As the member of the Engineering Support Team in the Water Services Division, you will be a part of a team that champions innovation, state-of-the-art facilities and clean, efficient technologies that sustain the Colorado Springs lifestyle.

As a Water Corrosion Engineer you will perform the following:

  • Desktop Analysis: Responsible for research in preparation of project analysis and design including record drawing review, field visits, staff interviews, and review of historical operation and maintenance.

  • Data Collection and Analysis: Collect field data including condition assessment of water main and cathodic protection data. Analyze data to determine replacement and or renewal strategies.

  • Design: Prepares engineering drawings and schematics using AutoCAD for cathodic protection and water main replacement.

  • Solicitation Preparation: Prepare scopes of work for external condition assessment, cathodic protection, replacement design and construction.

  • Construction Oversight: Responsible for quality control and oversight of condition assessment, design and construction projects.

  • Data Management: Responsible for documenting final record drawings and data in appropriate systems of record.

What will it take to be successful in this position? A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering is required. The ideal candidate will also come with a Fundamental Engineering / Engineer in Training (FE/EIT) certification and advanced level AutoCAD skills. Experience in the areas of water system design and assessment and cathodic protection design, installation, operation and maintenance with an emphasis in water distribution pipelines is preferred.
