Gas Construction Utility Worker

Colorado Springs Utilities is looking to fill a Gas Construction Hourly Utility Worker I position in the Energy Construction and Maintenance department. In this role, you will be required to assist gas crews with routine maintenance on the natural gas distribution system. This requires the ability to perform manual labor (which includes heavy lifting, shoveling and working in various types of weather) and general knowledge of basic construction operations. Employees will be working on or around the natural gas utility lines which are often in high traffic areas and therefore, you will be required to adhere to appropriate safety practices.

This role will require working overtime, weekends, holidays, and 24 hour call outs as business needs demand. In addition, you will work in hazardous conditions and subject to working in inclement weather.

Specific job assignments may include some or all the following:

  • Assist the natural gas construction crew with installation and repair of gas mains and services

  • Gather and deliver equipment and parts to complete daily tasks

  • Hand digging and shoveling

  • Maintaining and updating records daily

  • Use hand operated, electric, pneumatic and hydraulic power tools

  • May operate heavy equipment

  • Attend safety and training courses

  • May relocate work locations on short notice

  • Will be placed on the stand by calendar and subject to working overtime

  • Performs other duties as assigned

The ideal candidate will have skill in:

  • Maintaining cooperative working relationships in a team environment

  • General construction principles

  • Basic mathematics

  • General knowledge of blueprints, schematics and mechanics

  • Performing work safely and bringing safety hazards to the attention of others and supervisors

  • Operating equipment such as tandem dump trucks, rubber tire backhoes, loaders, tractor trailers, tanker trucks and mowers

  • Communicating both verbally and in writing

Please Note: I understand this position is classified as an "Hourly Non-Seasonal" position. As such, I understand, if hired, I will be considered an at-will, supplemental full-time or part-time non-exempt employee hired for seasonal, intern or short-term work longer than six (6) months, but typically not to exceed twenty-four (24) months; may also be for shorter periods of time in the case of seasonal work, internships or short term work in which direct control over work is needed.

I also understand, if hired, I am eligible for health care benefits and for state-mandated benefits or those prescribed according to Colorado Springs Utilities Personnel Policies Manual.

What will it take to be successful in this position? While you most likely already have acquired a high school diploma or GED and would have six months to two years related construction experience. The ideal candidate will offer experience working in the construction industry. We prefer the successful candidate to possess CDL Class B or higher license, tanker endorsement preferred or have the ability to obtain and maintain within 6 months of hire.
