New York Power Authority Manager Community Relations in Clark Energy, New York
Manager, Community Relations will be managing NYPA’s newest Admission Free Visitors’ Center, expected to open in summer 2020. This role researches, develops, plans, designs, maintains and implements policies and programs that enhance the organization's relations with the community, the public, and government authorities. The Manager’s main responsibilities are to direct the operations and manage the visitors’ center staff. This includes but is not limited to: Staffing, Scheduling, Event Planning, Events, Advertising, and Group Visits. Coordinates dissemination of the organization's communications with news or trade media contacts, through special events, public speaking or other means to reach defined audiences and meet specific program objectives. Develops and maintains a favorable relationship with the surrounding community. Prepares and coordinates programs to promote good will by disseminating information to the community and soliciting feedback from residents. May represent the organization at community gatherings or forums.
Coordinate all NYPA community and educational programs in assigned region,
Develop and implement public relations strategies to promote public understanding and support of NYPA and its programs.
In regions with Visitors Centers, direct the operations and manage visitor center staff this includes but is not limited to: Staffing, Scheduling, Event planning, Events, Advertising, Group Visits..
Coordinate NYPA’s communication efforts in region working with local and state officials, business leaders, civic groups, media and others to keep them advised of projects/programs, to hear their concerns or to seek their support.
Support all NYPA initiatives, working with Business Marketing Divisions to arrange or conduct informational presentations across the assigned region.
Assist Communications Unit in making site visits for proposed NYPA events.
Maintain current and updated email, cell phone and work phone lists of local, state and/or federal officials to contact, if directed, in an emergency. Work with the Energy Efficiency and the Economic Development departments to identify possible new projects and customers. Assist those departments in their contacts with elected and governmental officials, civic leaders, community and public opinion makers, business executives and special interest groups.
Maintain an awareness of public attitudes and perceptions that may impact Authority activities in the region and convey the same to management
Work with Communications, Director of Community Affairs, and VP of Community and Government Affairs regarding responding to inquiries or providing information provided to media, and other interested parties in assigned region.
Represent NYPA on boards and committees of key business and civic organizations. Strive to attain leadership positions
Identify and recommend NYPA participation in community events and co-sponsorship of such activities where appropriate. Direct NYPA’s involvement.
Establish/maintain effective lines of print and online communication with NYPA employees on programs/projects of interest to them.
Achieve a detailed technical knowledge of the plant’s operation and status in order to relate to such information to staff, headquarters, media, public officials, community leaders as well as general public.
Monitor print and electronic media for stories that relate to NYPA to ensure accuracy and report inaccuracies to Communications and supply correct data to proper staff.

Possess a detailed knowledge of NYPA goals and site specific operations in order to respond orally and in writing to inquiries and concerns from the general public
Ability to maintain communication with community leaders in order to adequately relay items of concern to senior management and to recommend programs and activities that meet NYPA objectives
Ability to make decisions regarding Visitor Center operations, staffing maintenance and program activities within budgeted guidelines and in accordance with union contracts
Proficient in use of computers using Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.), software, Internet browsers and e-mail functions
Ability to interpret and analyze information presented in various formats and make recommendations reflecting comprehension of data presented.
Education, Experience and Certifications
Bachelors’ degree in communications, public relations, business community relations, education or related field
Minimum 5 years of experience in public affairs, public relations or the community relations field preferred.
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Knowledge of region where assigned preferred
Experience in STEM education preferred
Experience supervising a staff in fast paced, public environment
Experience in handling emergency situations
Experience in working with government and community leaders preferred.
Knowledge of Utility Industry preferred
Ability to sit at a desk and use a computer and telephone.
Approximately 30% travel, primarily within assigned region of NY State
At higher level Rep I and above, ability to attend meetings/events outside of normal business hours.
Valid NY State Driver’s license
