Energy Market Analyst Sr

Job Description:

Contributes to the development and execution of AEP Energy Service’s Market Analytics Practice. The role is focused on producing high-quality analyses to support offerings and solutions built on insights into the energy markets and the frameworks in which they operate.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS are listed below:

  1. Perform wholesale market analysis and reports. This includes but is not limited to energy markets (basis, DA/RT, forwards, historic liquidations, futures, natural gas, and correlations), capacity markets (RTOs including Demand Response), transmission (NITS rates and tags), and ancillary services

  2. Collaborate with others to translate wholesale market changes into strategic opportunities

  3. Analyze utility tariff costs and trends for prospective or current electric and natural gas customers under evolving market and regulatory conditions.

  4. Generate reports and market insight for internal and external consumption through personal analysis, industry articles and in collaboration with wholesale trading, risk and structuring

  5. Develop and distribute relevant fundamental and technical analyses on energy markets

  6. Assess value and impact of various on-site energy assets including storage, distributed generation and efficiency

  7. Generate customer specific analyses upon request. These include savings analyses (tariff or current supply contract); hedging/product strategies; competitor comparisons; and custom analyses

  8. Develop and maintain sales tools and aids to model customer costs

  9. Develop and conduct presentations with sales reps for key customer opportunities

  10. Design commercial structures to integrate AEP Energy’s affiliate companies’ offerings and capabilities for customer solutions (distributed generation, renewables, energy storage, etc.)

  11. Lead collaborative efforts with other practice and program areas to build out new capabilities

  12. Works with Energy Market Analytics leadership to develop and advance analytical frameworks and approaches

  13. Works with Energy Market Analytics leadership and staff and across functions to develop effective solutions to analytical and customer challenges

  14. Acts as team lead and role model for other Energy Market Analysts.

Minimum Requirements:

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's Degree required. Advanced Degree a plus.

Experience: Minimum 5 years of relevant advanced analytical experience. Expertise in wholesale energy markets. Demonstrated ability to analyze market fundamental factors to identify intermediate to long term trends and factors relevant to energy management strategies. Facility with market technical analyses, including ability to construct analytical frameworks to inform short term intermediate term energy management strategies. Strong Microsoft Excel, modeling, and presentations skills. Proven statistical and quantitative abilities – coding proficiency in R, Python, SAS, or equivalent preferred.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  1. Ability to develop and deliver insightful recommendations to sales reps and customers

  2. Demonstrated experience consistently delivering independently produced, high-quality analytical reports within a tight deadline

  3. Highly organized and detail oriented. Ability to prioritize, plan proactively, manage conflicting priorities and multi-task effectively.

  4. Excellent communication skills – written, spoken, listening with ability to explain and interpret complex issues clearly, mindful of audience.

  5. Proactive problem-solving ability with results/solutions orientation, identify alternatives and develop unique solutions.

  6. Work with functional leaders to resolve customer service issues and exceptions and to develop new customer value propositions.
