Job Summary

As a Staff Mechanical Power Generation Systems Design Specialist, develops and evaluates plans and criteria for a variety of projects and activities to be carried out by the others. Assesses the feasibility and soundness of proposed engineering evaluation tests, products, or equipment when necessary data are insufficient or confirmation by testing is advisable. Usually performs as a staff advisor and consultant as to a technical specialty, a type of facility or equipment, or a program function.

Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of mechanical power generation systems engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields. Applies specialized knowledge of principles and practices in the design of systems for thermodynamic cycles, fluid flow, combustion, steam boilers, water treatment, heat exchangers, pumps, and turbines. Make decisions independently on engineering problems and methods and represents the organization in conferences to receive important questions and to plan and coordinate work. Requires the use of advanced techniques, and the modifications and extension of theories, precepts and practices of the field and related sciences and disciplines. The knowledge and expertise required for this level of work usually result from progressive experience.

Supervisory Responsibilities

May supervise, coordinate, and review the work of a small multidiscipline staff of engineers and technicians or staff specialist may be assisted on projects by other engineers or technicians.

Minimum Qualifications(Consistent with Classification Standard)

Education and Experience/Certificates, Licenses, and Registration Requirements/Other Requirements

A B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from an ABET accredited engineering school. An M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering school is desirable.

Full competence as a Mechanical Engineer as demonstrated by several years of experience at the senior level as a Project Engineer or Discipline Engineer.

License as a Professional Engineer is desired.
