Position Summary

The function of the E-Discovery group is to manage preservation, collection, and processing of data for litigation, HR, Ethics and regulatory matters. The work performed by this team mitigates risk to the company and contributes to cost savings. The Legal Hold Specialist function supports the Duke Energy’s legal department around legal hold obligations. We are seeking a self-motivated individual, who is capable of handling sensitive matters and willing to be a team player.

The Legal Hold Specialist is responsible for the management of the Legal Hold lifecycle and practices relating to legal holds, including:

  • Preparing and managing distribution of legal hold notices

  • Auditing legal hold issuance and notifications

  • Responding to custodian’s inquiries and working with attorneys and paralegal staff

  • Release of legal holds upon matter closing

  • Reporting on legal hold information to members of the legal department

  • Complies and maintains legal hold policies and procedures

  • Facilitates training for legal hold procedures and ensures delivery of training to new custodians and paralegals

  • Support eDiscovery team with preservation and collection of electronic data identified for legal hold

  • Support eDiscovery team with custodian interviews

  • Responsible for maintaining auditable reports around defensible legal hold methods

  • Legal hold tool SME including identification and resolution of system issues with vendor

  • SME on projects to replace or upgrade legal hold tool

  • Accountable for managing communications for Corporate Compliance by keeping them abreast of new legal holds as well as newly released of legal holds

  • SME in Legal for defensible destruction approval for data released on legal hold

Required/Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Five (5) or more years of experience as a paralegal, IT Support Professional in a Microsoft Messaging Platform , or similar role with a law firm or in-house legal team

  • Experience with Microsoft Office including demonstrated proficiency in Excel

Desired Qualifications

  • Three (3) or more years’ experience of eDiscovery experience

  • Two (2) or more years of Office 365 experience

  • Thorough understanding of data preservation and the legal hold lifecycle

  • Advanced level proficiency and work experience in Microsoft Office focusing primarily in Excel

  • Ability to take the initiative to prioritize and solve problems with limited guidance and management

  • Ability to maintain professional presence in high pressure situations

  • Adherence to processes and procedures while remaining results-oriented and "thinking outside the box"

  • Willingness to work extended hours to meet discovery deadlines

  • A positive attitude and genuine desire to be a team player willing to assist with other assignments

  • Working knowledge, experience and proficiency with eDiscovery related tools such as Relativity, Nuix, Legal Hold Pro, and Passport

  • E-Discovery certification

  • Paralegal Certificate from ABA-accredited program

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Robust organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills
