This is the fourth level of the Quantitative Analyst classification hierarchy. Employees at this level should be eager to investigate and learn independently, solve complex problems, manage work , take initiative and provide guidance and leadership to others with their experience and technical skills without supervision.
This position is responsible for the development, utilization and maintenance of the necessary quantitative models, procedures and systems required for modeling the economics of a large diverse regulated thermal and renewable generation fleet and a multi-commodity fuel & power portfolio. Applications in this domain include forecasting fuel requirements, evaluating the impact of solar penetration, optimizing economics of battery storage and more. The models developed may involve linear & non-linear optimization of unit commitment and dispatch, regression analysis, time series forecasting, derivative pricing, stochastic simulation of markets, renewables & demand, trade valuation and dynamic hedging, These models should be developed in a manner in which statistical analysis, model parameterization, stress testing, back testing, and scenario analysis are streamlined and easily performed.
Develop quantitative solutions for challenging business problems related to the economics of power generation & transmission; using techniques such as Monte Carlo simulation, time series forecasting, regression, mathematical optimization
Maintain, test and validate performance and validity of existing models using stress testing, back testing, scenario analysis, as well as probability distribution analysis, model parameterization
Evaluate potential opportunities for improvement/enhancement of current systems/practices via advanced quantitative methods
Present quantitative models and analyses to technical and business audiences
Continuously strengthen understanding of new challenges for regulated energy industry issues
Communicate/educate and train at all levels in the organization
Research and keep abreast of the latest developments in tools and techniques for quantitative analysis
Document models & analyses and ensure all work products and reports comply with both internal and external audit requirements
Master’s degree in a quantitative field such as mathematics, statistics, econometrics, engineering, physics or other related discipline
At least 5 years of quantitative and/or analytical experience
Practical programming experience with statistical/mathematical software packages such as MATLAB, SAS, R and Python
Familiarity with databases and querying large datasets
Strong quantitative programming skills. MATLAB expertise strongly preferred
In-depth knowledge in areas of specialization (e.g. derivative pricing theory and risk management techniques, understanding of unit commitment and dispatch, etc.)
Good understanding of mathematical optimization techniques and models
Understanding of basic inferential and mathematical statistics
A general understanding of electric, gas, oil or coal industries
Experience in financial and/or commodity markets
Strong understanding of database structures and ability to navigate and query existing databases with minimal assistance
Excellent communication and presentation skills with ability to communicate technical subjects to a wide range of audiences
Demonstrated ability in promoting cross-functional collaborations and critical thinking
