The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

This position will serve as the SME for the integration and development of standards of DR (Distributed Resource or DER) generation facilities on the Duke Energy Customer Delivery System within the Customer Delivery Operational and Automation Standards team. The incumbent would work with a group of SMEs within DR CD OAS peer sub team to develop protection, control, automation, and integration standards and provide application guidance for Duke and 3rd party DR facilities connecting to the grid. The incumbent would also partner with SMEs within the team and CD to support integration of Microgrids/Defined Control Areas from the DR Generation integration perspective.

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to the following

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity

  • Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities,

  • Deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity

  • Conducts engineering and related studies

  • Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems

  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities

  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Maintains accurate records and files

  • Supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally

Basic/Required Qualifications (Engineer III)

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

  • ​Four (4) years related work experience

Basic/Required Qualifications (Senior Engineer)

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE)

  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

Desired Qualifications

  • Increasingly proficient in principles of project management

  • Experience in the utility industry

  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles

  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations

  • Good written and oral communication skills

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam

  • Experience designing/developing system protection and control logic and settings

  • Experience performing system protection studies

  • Experience developing, building, and/or specifying and implementing relay settings templates

  • Experience developing and performing advanced modeling techniques with advanced electrical systems modeling software

  • Experience developing standards or application documents for major projects

  • Application engineering/Major Project experience

  • Distribution capacity planning experience

  • Distribution field engineering experience

  • Experience with Integration of power plant, distributed resources, or major industrial/commercial/government customer load facilities

  • Experience with SCADA control protocols, such as DNP, MODBUS, or IEC 61850

  • Familiarity with communication control concepts

  • Familiarity with IEEE 1547 standards series

  • Preferred PE certification or ability to obtain PE certification

  • Software: CYME, PSCAD, Mathcad, Simulink or other modeling software
