Ideal location is Charlotte, NC based but can also be located virtually within the lower 48 states.

Note: This position may be filled as an Engineer III or Senior Engineer dependent upon a candidate's skills and experience.

This position will provide engineering and technical support to Duke Regulated and Commercial Renewables Business Development teams in pursuit of distributed energy investment opportunities, including acquisitions and greenfield development projects, with a focus on battery energy storage and microgrids. Applicants are expected to have engineering skills related to power system modeling of distribution and/or transmission electric systems. Experience with battery energy storage systems is highly sought. Experience with solar and wind renewables projects is preferred.

This position will:

  • Provide engineering support to technical matters throughout the development process with a focus on power system modeling and integration of distributed energy technologies in Duke regulated jurisdictions in addition to commercial projects nation-wide.

  • Utilize knowledge of electric utility facilities, distributed energy technologies, utility interconnection requirements, and control and metering schemes to evaluate, identify, and mitigate commercial risks associated with proposed project designs.

This position must work collaboratively with key internal business unit stakeholders, including Project Management and Construction (PMC), Supply Chain, Transmission, Distribution, IT, and Health & Safety, among others. The position may also require working with third-party consultants.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Support greenfield development through site screening and selection, system feasibility studies, preliminary design, cost estimates, and overall technical due-diligence.

  • Perform power system modeling utilizing tools such as CYME, PSCAD and MATLAB.

  • Create and submit interconnection requests for distributed energy projects and analyze study results.

  • Work with Supply Chain on issuing RFPs for EPC and key equipment components.

  • Support efforts to optimize distributed energy generation systems design and output.

  • Develop techno-economic models to support improvement of project return on investment.

  • Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and design plans related to projects and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.

  • Develop optimization tools specific to Duke Energy solar, battery energy storage, and microgrid projects.

  • Stay informed of technology advancements, market trends, and relevant guidelines and standards related to distributed energy technology.

  • Maintain equipment supplier relationships and advise Supply Chain and PMC on distributed energy technology trends.

  • Participate in R&D projects with external Universities, National Labs, and consultants on topics that advance distributed energy technology.

    Key skills and experience: power system modeling utilizing tools such as CYME, PSCAD and MATLAB.

    Basic/Required Qualifications Engineer III

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering obtained from an ABET accredited program, OR a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering

  • Minimum of four (4) years of engineering experience

    Basic/Required Qualifications Senior Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering obtained from an ABET accredited program, OR a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering

  • Minimum of six (6) years of engineering experience

    Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in the electric utility industry and a demonstrated understanding of distribution and transmission materials, functionality, applications, and concepts.

  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles

  • Master’s Degree with a concentration in Power Systems

  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds

  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated effective organizational skills

  • Proficient in principles of project management

  • Passing grade on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam

Compensation Package

Estimation of Annual Base Pay Range: $82,200 - $115,000

Grade: L/M

Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience.
