Position Summary

This position primarily is responsible for managing the preparation and analysis of Duke Energy’s consolidated monthly internal financial reporting package and for managing the monthly financial close consolidation process. This position also handles certain aspects of the quarterly preparation of the Company’s SEC filings and financial earnings release (on Forms 10-K, 10-Q, and 8-K). This position manages and provides guidance to a team of individual contributors.

This position works closely with segment and jurisdictional teams within the Controller’s organization as well as Investor Relations, Finance & Finance Program Office, Rates & Regulatory, Legal and Tax. This position requires the knowledge and experience to solve complex reporting or consolidation issues.

NOTE: Based on an assessment of the Finance leadership team (Finance ELT) an incumbent in the Manager Accounting I job may be considered eligible for a Manager Accounting II level position if the job is deemed complex and impactful, and the incumbent has 2+ years of demonstrated successful people leadership experience. The job position in this posting are eligible for the Manager Accounting II level title.


  • Manage the process of preparation and analysis of corporate financial results, including earnings flash and summary reporting, for monthly reporting to senior management or the Board of Directors.

  • Manage the monthly consolidation process which includes consolidating journal entries, preparation of the cash flow and equity statements, corporate structure oversight, system related change requests (HFM), reopen controls.

  • Manage the preparation and review of the earnings release for investor relations.

  • Preparation/review of certain financial statements and disclosures related to the Form 10Qs and 10Ks as assigned by the SEC reporting director.

  • Ensures that corporate reporting meets GAAP and SEC requirements.

  • The position interfaces with business representatives at all levels, in all jurisdictions and business segments, to provide expertise and assistance for accurate and timely reporting.

  • Work with external auditors on items such as quarterly adjusting journal entries and passed disclosures.

  • Handle research and documentation of significant accounting or disclosure issues/conclusions.

  • Effectively prepare presentations for management review and decision making.

  • Identify or champion process improvements and efficiencies at all stages of the monthly close and reporting process.

  • Involvement in special projects, as needed.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Dependent on people management experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned to as a Manager Accounting is outlined below.

Manager Accounting I:

  • Education: Bachelor Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or equivalent

  • Experience: 8+ years of relevant work experience

  • CPA

  • Knowledge of and experience with GAAP and SEC rules and regulations

Manager Accounting II:

  • Education: Bachelor Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or equivalent

  • Experience: 8+ years of relevant work experience including at least 2 years of direct management experience leading Finance or Accounting professionals

  • CPA

  • Knowledge of and experience with GAAP and SEC rules and regulations

  • Experience with financial systems: wDesk, HFM and smartview, PeopleSoft, Adobe Pro, and Advanced Microsoft Office products skills (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
