About the Opportunity

These are open temporary positions with Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.


Regularly and customarily performs a variety of semi-routine customer service functions, endeavoring to create, improve and maintain high standards of customer and public relations.

  1. Accepts customer service requests and prepares necessary source documents to establish or terminate electric service. Completes credit review associated with new accounts, and accepts credit deposits when necessary.

  2. Responds to routine customers' inquiries or complaints relative to bills, rates, services, etc., using specific knowledge of Company policy and the rates, rules and regulations of the State's utility regulatory commission, a general knowledge of Company organization and the basic functions of various departments.

  3. Processes meter reading documents before and after reading and prepares appropriate orders for record correction, field investigation and substitute meter reading documents.

  4. Maintains security deposit files and records involving duties such as preparing certificates of deposit and source documents for system input, voluntary deposit refunds, deposits applied or refunded, deposit transfers and monthly deposit reconciliation.

  5. Analyzes computer terminal displays and hard copy data messages and takes corrective action where necessary. Prepares field investigation orders and estimates consumption on defective or unread meters.

  6. Maintains reports and records applicable to inactive accounts. Researches unpaid inactive accounts for possible transfers or determination of the customer's forwarding address.

  7. Compiles, coordinates and distributes source documents to data processing locations for system input. May be required to maintain pending and completed files of source documents being processed by the districts and data input locations.

  8. Receives and handles calls during emergency conditions and service interruptions.

  9. Prepares statements of accounts and types of various reports, checks, statements and routine customer correspondence.

  10. Prepares monetary and nonmonetary transactions to correct customer master records through hard copy source documents or terminal keyboard entry.

  11. May be required to operate telephone console and keep records relating to telephone service.

  12. Reviews and monitors delinquent accounts; initiates customer contact relative to outstanding account balances; directs field collection activity within established parameters dictated by Company policy and regulatory agency's requirements; accumulates and maintains records and prepares necessary reports relative to delinquent accounts receivable.

  13. Prepares and/or audits manual bills for electric service.

  14. Operates all normal office equipment as necessary.

  15. Performs other related clerical duties as required.

Qualifications Include:

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Minimum one year of customer service experience preferred

  • Analytical ability and judgment

  • Must pass the Edison Electric Institute Support and Administrative Selection System (SASS) test

  • Demonstrated ability to interact with internal and external customers in a tactful, diplomatic and courteous manner

  • Proficient in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel)

  • Excellent phone, verbal and written communication skills

  • Willingness to work overtime as needed, including emergency situations.

  • Ability to progress through various levels in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

We administer selection tests for a variety of positions. The required tests have been developed by the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), a trade association of investor-owned electric utility companies.
